If a "fan" isn't an active supporter then they're worthless to the club.

Do you have any evidence that the Sydney clubs have a lot of active supporters in regional NSW?

The annual reports for the Sydney clubs reveal that they make very little money from memership and merchandise. This would suggest they don't have many active supporters in regional NSW. Penrith are the only club bucking the trend in this field.
What’s your definition of an active supporter?

I have access to Roy Morgan‘s supporter profiles for every club.

Your assumption there is that a club’s merchandise is mainly sold in that club’s specific geographical area. You only need to go to merchandise stores in regional NSW to see what specific teams they stock and see that isn’t true. Most stores will stock jerseys etc for Sydney teams like Rabbitohs, Panthers et al. Stores don’t stock merchandise that nobody wants and won’t sell. They are businesses after all.

We’re talking actual fans, not the Roy Morgan type.
If you’re not a member, attending games or buying merch then you’re not much value as a “fan”. I’d say 80% plus of active fans live in a 30km radius of where the clubs play their home Games. No evidence but would be Interesting to see data on membership locations, ticket sales etc
You do realise that Roy Morgan supporter profiles break down into TV viewers, attendance fans and merchandise fans?

NRL also tracks the locations of club members for marketing purposes.

It also claims some clubs have a million “fans” lol

like I said I’d be very surprised if 80% of active fans arent living In relatively close proximity to the clubs home stadium.

and by active I mean fans who spend money on their clubs through memberships, attending games and buying merch.

Again, the profiles are broken down by the category of fan. You can by a breakdown for a Shark fans that attends games or a Roosters fans that buys merchandise.
You’re criticising something you’ve never actually looked at and likely would never understand.

By all means share a link to this detailed data, I’m sure there’s much mirth to be had about clubs having hundreds of thousands of fans.

I’m happy to share it with people other than you. But for you, it will cost you $5500 per club.

I'm going by the sales figures listed in the clubs' annual reports.
