Here's an article i have written on my views on your team for next year, i dont mean to be offensive in anyway towards your club, its just my basic opion! All the best for 2004

Cronulla Sharks

The Sharks are a club that is in turmoil with Coach Chris Anderson and his fellow board members and coaching staff all at logger heads, a huge exodus of players leaving the club including many big names, Anderson causing a rift between players and club officials. There is just endless drama at this once seemingly successful club and that’s why all sings point to a Wooden Spoon in 2004.

Cronulla are seemingly a cursed club, while they have had many teams in seasons passed with the ability to come away with a Premiership, the Cronulla curse of choking has hit them and they have fallen at the final hurdle. A dismal 2003 season saw the Sharks finished 12th place, their lowest finish in the post Super League era. Again in 2004 I can see the club struggling to match it with any club in the NRL considering they have made some fairly impressive player signings for next year. Yet I think Anderson’s constant whinging and complaining will again effect the club so much that players will begin to not care about playing for the Sharks and want to get out the club and move onto greener pastures as many players have done already. It seems that Anderson has brought nothing but turmoil with him to the club and his promise of delivering the Sharks a Premiership in 3 to 5 years is a false one. Unfortunately I have to say to all you Cronulla fans out there that I think your club is destined for a Wooden Spoon in 2004 and here are the contributing factors to why I believe it will be another disappointing year for the club.

Chris Anderson is doing nothing good for the club in terms of building for a successful future. All he seems to be doing is arguing with board members and players and just generally spitting the dummy if he doesn’t get his own way. He is causing a rift between himself, his team and the board. This is not what you want heading into seasons where you desperately have to make amends for a poor 2003 campaign.

The huge exodus of players leaving the club has been a telling factor in Cronulla’s demise. Ever since John Lang has left the club the Sharks have lost 19 players who were players usually in the Cronulla 17 each week. This has seen plenty of experience leave the club meaning a lot of younger blokes have to be brought into the team blooded in first grade footy earlier than they possibly should have. Some of Cronulla’s young stars have found it tough to play top grade footy which is expected considering the circumstances the club is in. Not only has their player retention been poor, but their recruiting skills haven’t been to flash either. The only successful recruits in the post John Lang era have been Brett Kimmorley, Phil Bailey and Danny Nutley. The rest have showed some signs of promise but have been pretty ordinary most of the time. Hopefully new buys in Nigel Vagana, Andrew Lomu and Nathan Merritt can spark your team into a possible successful finals campaign.

The club for starters doesn’t have a decent goal kicker, I know a lot of you will be going well what the hell does not having a goal kicker got to do with the price of eggs. Yet in reality it’s a huge factor in the Sharks game, how many games have Cronulla blown in the past due to the fact their kicker has only kicked 1/5 etc. Ever since Mat Rogers left the club goal kicking skills have left also. Perhaps it would be in their best interest to either recruit a player who is decent and can kick or get Kimmorley or someone some proper practice from a professional like Jason Taylor or Daryl Halligan.

The flat attack approach is a real worry as that game plan is so predictable and easy to defend against. Since when was the last time a team who adopted flat attack as their choice of play won the competition? I can’t even remember. Cronulla got their attack slaughtered last year by teams this just shows the flat attack simply does not work in this day and age yet Mr Anderson persists.

Kimmorley is relied upon too much in the Sharks outfit, he is their only real attacking option and without him look like Souths. He provides the team with a good kicking game and good direction around the park and seems to add new dimension to the Sharks team, but without him they will struggle and the team must learn how to win without him. People might say well Kimmorley isn’t the only player in the team what about Peachey and Stevens. Well both those two are passed their days of great Rugby League, the Peach is going rotten and Stevens wedgie giving days are coming to an end.

The final telling factor at why the Sharks will take the spoon is their inexperience. The Sharks are full of young blokes who have just gone through their first full season of first grade earlier probably than they should of. Yet this could work to an advantage while it could also lead to a telling disadvantage. Who can remember the baby Eels they simply did not know what pressure was and got out there and gave it their all. They brought youth and optimism into league and benefited from it entirely, yet now the baby Eels are lazy teenagers. The Baby Sharks could turn themselves into a real force if they follow the same road Parramatta once did. Although the baby Sharks could get stage fright and crumble under the pressure of first grade footy causing huge trouble for a club starved of success.

There you have it, the Sharks are a club in trouble, very big trouble and I don’t think much can be done about it until Chris Anderson is removed from his Coaching position. It seems this man once hailed as a super coach is a super pain in the arse. Cronulla are a good club with enormous potential, but with Anderson at the helm I very much doubt that potential will ever be realised. He is the type of coach that can tell world class players what to do, but struggles with rising juniors which is a big problem. The way Cronulla are headed at the moment I can only see all doom and gloom for a now seemingly soulless club.

Your line up doesn't include great young talent like Galloway, Aitken, Newton etc.

Can I just ask where you think Parramatta will end up? Look at who they have bought...Do you really see them going any better next year? :?

I'm not offended....

I just can't see how you think we will get beat by Souths and Manly :? ..Keep in mind the injuries we had this year to key players. We showed we can play in Newcastle but then injuries and inexperience came around. Now these guys have 20 + first grade games while the younger blokes are still coming through.

I just think all the arguin and stuff going on at your club will cause players focuses on the game to somewhat be interupted. I mean you have a side that can make the 8 easily infact anyone in the comp bar Manly and Souths can make the finals if they get themselves together. But yeah i just think all the dramas will get to the players heads and it will be the clubs unfortunate undoing

While I'd love to see Sully at no.6, I'd say that either Birdy or Aitken will be five-eighth with Sully on the bench.

Thanks for the article Parra.

While it does have some valid comments, I do think we have a good chance of making the eight next year. The buggest threat to this though, as I see it, is the attitude of the coach. Granted, that we only hear the sensationalist side that the media wants to put across, but at face value, it sounds like Anderson has well and truly had a gutful and wants out. If he decides to fall on his sword and resign or request a release, we do have a fallback option in Stuart Raper. He isn't the Australian coach and doesn't have Anderson's experience, but he is respected by the players and the Cronulla faithful and would make up for the lack of experience with improved morale.

If we had the same team next year as we finished with this year, I doubt that we could expect better than bottom four again. The new signings though will plus the gaps that have cost us most of this year in terms of defence and should give us more options in attack. My greatest worry is the lack of a class 5/8 to support Kimmorley. If only Preston had persevered and not spat the dummy because he couldn't have the No. 7s jersey! Bird and Sullivan are the two main contenders for the No. 6 position in my opinion and neither has really put their hand up so far this year. Aitken may be another option, but he is still very young and I see him more as a future prospect. Bird and Sullivan both need to work on their defence in the off season and I see Sullivan as first choice 5/8 and Bird as lock. A bit of bulking up would also help.

We've got some good young players that will have a learned a great deal from their experience this year. Many of these players would probably not have been given the chance if it weren't for the injuries to key players during the year or the departure of players like McKenna, Mellor, Treister and Graham from the club. Players like Nutley, Galloway, Friend, Isemonger and Gallen have put their hands up and should continue to improve next year. Williams, Merritt and Pelo are good additional young signings which combined with the experience of Vagana, one of the best attacking players in the game (and pretty handy in defence as well), and Lomu, I feel that we will have the foundations of a pretty solid premiership campaign next year.

A problem that you haven't touched on though is the one of sponsorship. The increasing friction, if that is possible, between Anderson and the Board, assuming all the media reports are correct, would have to have a damaging impact on the club's ability to attract and retain support from sponsorship. If the change to the poker machine taxes does go through, this will be an even more crucial element of each club's funding and continued survival.

where is the credibility of your article if you predict we will finish with the wooden spoon? We have a plethora of tip-top young talent coming through and coupled with the seasoned signings of internationals Lomu and Vagana the only place we are going to finish is in the top 6

Here's a response i have written on my views on your article on our team for next year, i dont mean to be offensive in anyway towards you, its just my basic opion!

- When trying to prove a point, don't contradict yourself. For example,"I think your club is destined for a Wooden Spoon in 2004 and here are the contributing factors" and "Hopefully new buys in Nigel Vagana, Andrew Lomu and Nathan Merritt can spark your team into a possible successful finals campaign." The Sharks are going to come last, but they could win a premiership.

- "the Sharks have lost 19 players who were players usually in the Cronulla 17 each week". Yes we have lost players, but how you stated that fact makes very little sense. I'd explain to you how it makes little sense, but I'd rather not spend the next four years writing.

- When explaining how to rectify our goalkicking woes, you said in part"...or someone some proper practice from a professional like Jason Taylor or Daryl Halligan." What a fantastic suggestion, I wish the Sharks had thought of it. Oh wait they have, we have Halligan.

- "Since when was the last time a team who adopted flat attack as their choice of play won the competition? I can’t even remember" If you can barely remember who won the competition in 1999, why write an article on a facet of Rugby League? Or even expect us to listen to your predictions for the future?

- "Cronulla got their attack slaughtered last year by teams this just shows the flat attack simply does not work in this day and age yet Mr Anderson persists." Please, try and watch our games and listen to what Anderson himself has said. Before you write an article. You would have heard Anderson affirm that he understood that the flat attack wasn't working, and he is now using other methods of attack. You would have seen deeper attack in this seasons later games.

-"the Peach is going rotten" Witty? Hardly. You have told us how poor our season was, how we have lost so many good players. Now explain how was Peachey meant to shine? Wesser didn't make headlines in a stuggling Panthers team, but I am sure you are singing his praises now.

- A "soulless club" it's not. If it is, why are members and fans so frustrated? Why did Anderson respond in the way he did when his son was dropped? Why where those who were sacked found other jobs within the club? Look up soulless in the dictionary.

- "The final telling factor at why the Sharks will take the spoon is their inexperience. The Sharks are full of young blokes who have just gone through their first full season of first grade earlier probably than they should of." Inexperience? A full season of Rugby League means inexperience? Isn't playing a full year of Rugby League experience? You really need that dictionary. Fast.

The rest seemed 'fine', even though it's a regurgitation of what has been said many times before.

I don't know how the Sharks will fare next season, and it does look uncertain like many have said. Hopefully they exceed expectations, but I'm not about to expect anything.

Once again, don't take offence.
Buy a dictionary.
Learn from your mistakes.

I agree with you Punk.

At that start of the year when the Sunday Telegraph tipped us to make the top 4 (from memory), I knew that we'd struggle. Most seasons, they tip is to finish outside the 8 and we perform like champions (we were tipped to finish either 9th or 10th in 2001 and 2002).

With all the friction at the club, they should give us bagging and long odds of making the semis. Which means then that we are near certainties (of making the 8).

A bit of tongue in cheek Irish logic for you there.

On a more serious note, I do think the addition of Vagana, Lomu and Merritt are huge boosts for the club. We've suffered no worrying losses of quality players and, provided Anderson and the Board can get their differences resolved and agree to get on with the job, 2004 should see us easily make the semis. We may not win the comp next year, a big ask given the year we've had this year, but it will be a great platform to doing so in 2005.

Go you Sharkies!!!!!

Nothing wrong with the post IMO

I don't agree with it all and some things may be a bit a harsh but as Mr Parra Eels said he is doing all teams and is having a go.

Good effort MPE :)

Not a bad article, but I don't think we will be anywhere near 15th. I think we'll finish closer to first than last. I am far more confident about next season than deep down I was at the start of this year. The only problem is the internal fighting. If players start walking out then we've got problems. But a few of the kids we are bringing through are top notch, so I'm very confident we will bounce back next year.

Some of the comment here was pretty close and some of it(wooden spoon) was farsical, wonder where Mr.Parra eel is these days, lamenting over what has happened to his beloved Parra. Although he got pretty close with our team was a good effort...........See ya son.

Top 17 is not far of the mark, considering when it was posted.
Spoon was never ours.
