Size beat you, Nathan

WHEN South Sydney winger Nathan Merritt failed to gain selection in the City Origin side he was frustrated, angry and depressed. So much so that he came right out and said what he was thinking.
"Is it because I'm Aboriginal?" When those words were spread over the back page of a Sydney newspaper the massed intake of breath could have set off a tsunami.
In these enlightened days of political correctness it is simply not the done thing to play the "race card".
The Australian Rugby League was shocked.
It sent Aboriginal employee Ricky Walford, a veteran of one Origin match, out to defuse the situation.
Selector Bob McCarthy sat down with Merritt to talk the issue through, and Country player Preston Campbell, an Aborigine who waited eight years to get his first representative jersey, told him to keep his head down and his mouth shut.
"It's not going to help his chances of getting selected in future rep sides," he said.
True, but it's probably not going to make things any worse either.
The facts are that Merritt, despite being one of the most exciting wingers in the game, is almost no hope of playing Origin football.
Because he is Aboriginal? Well, yes in part; to the same degree that a white runner is unlikely to win the Olympic 100 metres sprint or an Afro-American won't beat the Kenyans in the 3000m steeplechase. That's just the way he's built.
The perception of Aboriginal rugby league players is that they are quick, intuitive, brilliant ball players . . . and too small to handle the physicality of Origin football.
Of course, as with all stereotypes, there are exceptions. Arthur Beetson combined all the best qualities of a backline magician with commanding physical stature. Put together it made the ultimate football package and created one of the greatest rugby league players.
Merritt's South Sydney teammate Dean Widders is an Aboriginal footballer who boasts both size and skill; Wendell Sailor was another, but such a combination is rare.
Aboriginal players are more likely to be on the smaller side, like Campbell, Matt Bowen or Rhys Wesser.
At club level they are considered indispensable. They are match-winners and crowd-pleasers but are rarely seen as representative material.
Given the chance the selectors will always go for bigger men, physically imposing and less subtle in their skills: the likes of Sailor, Lote Tuqiri, Eric Grothe, Adam MacDougall and Timana Tahu.
Again there are exceptions. Dale Shearer and Matt Sing were fixtures in Queensland Origin sides for years but Anthony Mundine and Nathan Blacklock never got the chances many felt their club form warranted.
And, like it or not, it was because of their Aboriginality. Not their skin colour, but their size.
Their genetic blueprint made them small and explosive. Generations of sporting stereotyping branded them "fragile" or "suspect in defence".
Of course that is not to say the selectors were being prejudicial in their omission of Merritt last week. Realistic more like it.
Faced with two spots and three players of similar ability, they went for one who is bigger and one who is the best goal-kicker in the game.
Significantly, one of them is a Muslim born in Lebanon and the other of Fijian descent, so it wasn't race that counted against Merritt but the range of attributes each candidate brought to the table. And he certainly isn't the only Aboriginal player to suffer because of his physical stature.
Anyone who thinks Karmichael Hunt is having a significantly better season than Matt Bowen hasn't been paying attention.
After seven matches, two of which he played at halfback, Hunt has scored three tries, completed 37 tackles and missed 21. Bowen has scored seven tries and one field goal, completed 23 tackles and missed 11.
And who have the Australian, and probably Queensland selectors, chosen at fullback? Hunt who is 9cm taller and almost 15kg heavier.
Campbell is right to tell Merritt to keep his trap shut and keep plugging away. He hasn't got much choice, unless he can find a sport in which athletes only face opponents of the same size and weight.
Like Anthony Mundine did.

Good article there. Probably the most sense I've heard regarding this whole sensationalist saga!

wtf thats crud.. to say there are only a few exceptions is ridiculous.. when i have never seen a qld team without aboriginal players, nsw on the other hand. still trying to decide which is worse, saying he missed out because hes black, or saying he missed out due to his race being geneticly inferior.

WTF?

Hunt is listed at 86kg, how is that 15kg more than Bowen.

And ftr, Hunt is listed as being LIGHTER than Merrit!

What a load of crap, he's missed out because of his size, if Aboriginies are genetically smaller then that's just tough luck, he's not missing out based on race. I suppose Asian footy players should jump on to this debate, the only reason they're not filling rep teams is because their race is genetically smaller. Boo f**ken hoo.

Merritt scores tries and that is good. But there is a lot more to being a representitive winger. Believe it or not Merritt was not picked because El Masri has been in great form and Hayne was an Australian player that the selectors decided deserved the chance to prove himself.

He missed out (narrowly) because there were other options (one with Arabic heritage, the other Fijian) preferred by selectors. Both of the guys chosen over him have been selected in Australia teams/squads.

If he wasn't aboriginal people would be saying "geez that's tough luck, he's been playing well." Because he is aboriginal some are determined to see it as racist.

i never said he missed out because of race.. that reporter did, i think what that reporter said is racist, and he is playing the race card.

Kooriguy, Slater Tate and Hunt don't come into it. It was between Hayne, El Masri and Merrit, and as someone said, Hayne is bigger, El Masri is the world's best goalkicker. I would have picked Merrit over Hayne, but obviously the selectors saw differently. In regards to the article, there's a difference between scientific differences and simply being racist. If you read an article saying that men can't have babies because they lack a uterus, would you claim it was sexist?

NSW are preoccupied with picking robots ... all the same size and all offer the same qualities (or lack thereof)

Ricky Stuart started it and they haven't moved on as yet

This team of robots may be successful with Johns leading them around, but now they have no decent playmakers they will continue to look pedestrian and have little or no chance of success

I hope the majority of the incumbents play for several more seasons ... in Cooper, King, Lyon, Hindmarsh, Ryan, O'Meley, Simpson, Gower and Anasta you get nothing more than a solid player and in some cases a high workrate

(What is the point of picking Fitzgibbon, Quinn, Cusack, Mark Mini in the so-called "trial" ... they are never going to play in blue in the future)

Every team needs this type of player, but no team needs 10 of them

If the NSW selectors are fair dinkum, they need to look to the future and prepare accordingly ... this year they are simply outmatched so take advantage of the opportunity to find players for the future

Players like Farah, Collis, Hayne, Carney, Mullen, Bird could provide answers both now and in the future ... will any of them be picked ? not likely

And therefore, sucked in cockroaches ... you gonna get owned this year and unless you do something about it, for some years to come

Oink !

aborigines are not genetically smaller in size than anglo australians... thats a load of rubbish, they are smaller in general because so many live below the poverty line thus they are malnourished...

as for merrit, hayne is 5 cm taller than him, if thats why he was picked then NSW will not beat queensland in a series until they pick players based on form and skill...

This thread is nonsense because Merritt just isn't that small

He's not big either, but he's pretty much a fairly normal size for a winger. At 183cm he certainly isn't short.
If the selectors have not picked him on the basis that he is too small because he is an Aborigine, then that is racism, because they are making an assumption about him based on race (when, believe it or not, they could just stick him on some scales, get some measuring tape, or look his player profile up on the internet:?)

So its OK to Stereo-type players based on race with out giving them a chance.

Im sure Soccer will be all the more richer for it.

Haz was needed for his goal kicking prowess, so his size was overlooked.

Tate and Hunt were not up for selection, and in any case are both vastly superior players to Merritt. Their huge skill and strength levels make up for their size. Merritt's does not.
