SL Stadium developments

Unlikely, unfortunately they have capped HKR fan tickets at 3,500 which have sold out in a days. Without ability for the other 5k HKR fans to get in it wont sell out. They've also increased the ticket prices for this game which is annoying fans of both sides.
Can’t anyone just buy tickets online?

RFL looking to offlad Odsal lease:

The latest on the Odsal Stadium lease is that the RFL are asking for best bids for the Rugby League property by no later than Wednesday 31st January 2024. It is hoped that a sale will take place in February.

Interesting fact:

Odsal stadium once held the world record for the largest ever RL attendance. The stadium's highest attendance was 102,569 in 1954 for the Warrington-Halifax Challenge Cup Final replay. Eventually overtaken by the 1999
NRL opening round double header at stadium Australia, which was superseded by the 1999 NRL GF.

Wakefield vs Wigan abandoned last night because of multiple floodlight failures. Not a great start for the new stand!

People say that there was far more than 102k at odsal that day.

looking at that photo it’s easy to see why.

Better the issues happen now than when the season starts. Whilst not ideal, sorting out an electrical short often isn't a big piece of work.

Great news for Salford

SALFORD have the stadium deal they wanted – and hopes are rising they will get the money needed to make sure they are not victims of rugby’s ‘national crisis.’

The city’s council has voted through a £7 million buyout of current joint venture partners Peel – putting a total value of £14 million on what is now the Salford Community Stadium - which would open up access to much-needed cash.

But while city mayor Paul Dennett told SunSport he will do all he can to make sure the Red Devils - choked by red tape for the last year - pull through to avoid a ‘tragedy,’ the financial state of both codes is bigger than one authority.

He said: “Both codes of rugby are really struggling. The Government put money into league just to keep the clubs and the sport alive.

“There’s a national crisis in rugby at the moment. Salford City Council isn’t going to solve that on its own.

“So we need to work with the likes of Sport England, the Rugby Football League and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport to properly come forward with a strategy to support rugby.

“It would be tragic for the city of Salford to lose a 150-year-old institution. We need to do all we can to get behind the club. We can achieve great things working with this great club.

“It’s an institution that came out of the city of Salford for the city of Salford. That’s the sort of institution I believe in.

“Without this club, we lose so much. You really can’t put a price on that positive social impact – that’s what we’re fighting for.

“And we’re going to have to try and support this club in whatever way we can, there’s no doubt about it. We need to keep them alive.”

Still think this stadium is a bit of a white elephant and wish Salford could have somehow stayed at the willows.

The stadium is stuck in the middle of nowhere miles away from the city next to the motorway.
A few got built like that sadly. Wigan same, even my club moved from a prime location in heart of the community to a greenfields site thats hard to get to. Sadly most of them had to sell the prime real estate to cover debts and take whatever land the council was offering.

That was the beauty of the willows, a stadium within walking distance for large parts of the supporter base.

Wasn’t there supposed to be a train or tramline station built next to the new stadium?

yes was supposed to be on metronet but only got as far as the trafford centre!
It was announced in Jan last year it would finally get built no not sure if they have actually committed to a timeline for it. Maybe now council has full ownership it might get done. Theres a fair bit of land for development around the stadium they now own so probably makes good commercial sense for them to get the tram running to it.

Salford City Council is taking full control of the AJ Bell Stadium as part of a £65 million redevelopment plan.

The purchase will include the rights to the car park and training pitches as well as the development land around the site. The full development is expected to create around 790 new jobs, delivering £28 million worth of social value and attracting £65 million of private sector investment.

Salford Mayor Paul Dennett said: “In a mission close to my heart, Salford Red Devils RLFC will retain their position playing in the city of Salford, which is why the Community Stadium was built in the first place all those years ago, along with it being a place to call home for Salford Reds and Sale Sharks.

“We’ll be able to recommit to the original vision of the stadium for the community and its people. The future will be grounded in a new sports & leisure and rugby strategy.”

The mayor believes this is a huge opportunity to increase participation in sport in Salford and improve mental health and wellbeing through rugby.
Paul King, the managing director of Salford Red Devils, added: “I can’t understate how important the conclusion of the deal is for the club. We’ve stretched as best as we can for as long as we can to get even to this point today, and once the agreement gets over the line, it really does give us access to some transformative opportunities.”

Tony Sutton, the chief executive of the Rugby Football League, added that it is “excellent news” that Salford Council is acquiring full ownership of the stadium.

Tony added: “The city has been associated with Rugby League since 1896, when the Salford club joined the Northern Union, and the sport is therefore embedded deeply in the community and its history.
“The RFL has been delighted to engage with Salford City Council and the Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham throughout a long and complicated process, and we will continue to do so as we work with Mayor Dennett and his team to continue to grow the numbers of people playing Rugby League in the region.”

Yesterday, the Mayor Dennett held a media event at the AJ Bell stadium (the home of the Salford Red Devils and Sale Sharks).

This event was done a day before the cabinet meeting which would determine if the council is to buy 50 per cent of the stadium from PEEL. This decision has come with opposition from the Salford City Councillor Robin Garrido. Who opposed the idea as he believed that the council didn’t have the funds to buy the remaining 50 per cent.
One massive concern for the Red Devil’s was their low attendances with only an average attendance of 5384. Whilst that is a 19 per cent increase from 2022 it still ranks as one of the lowest in the leagues according to Paul King.

There has also been 500 less tickets sold this season over fears of the Red Devils ultimately being kicked out of the AJ Bell Stadium.

Mayor Dennett yesterday outlined the need for better public transport around the stadium including an extension to the tram line close to the stadium. This will ensure that games are more accessible to the people of Salford.

Mayor Dennett added: “This isn’t just about the stadium it’s about the land around it that we need to regenerate and obviously we need to negotiate with the cost of the debt and how it will be repaid over time.”

I wonder if the Red Devils run buses from various parts of the city out to the new stadium?

I’m pleased to say I was at both those Stadium Australia games… unfortunately for losses in both.
