Sleeping giants

For Souths, we were a sleeping giant.

We then woke up, won everything, and the giant walked off into the sunset with half our (mostly older) supporters.

It's rebuilding time for the club and not just on the field. Hopefully we don't fail like the Dragons did (sorry Dragons fans).

Right now I'd say it's the Knights. For Sydney teams, the Eels should be the biggest club in the city.

The decision to move to Accor was a poor one for Souths …

The decision to re-sign there until 2030 is the shocker here.

The initial move kept us financially afloat, saw our membership base grow, etc. It was a very good move at the time.

Unfortunately, that time is over, it should have ended in 2022 but there's no-one left at the club with the pull to get the move done.

Yeah it's weird that both Souths and Saints haven't seen growth in their supporter base 10-15 years on from periods of ultimate success the same way that the roosters and dogs have.

Warriors should be looking to taking a couple big games to Eden Park and seriously considering a full time move there once the pending upgrades happen to make it a better rectangular ground. They already sell out Mt Smart all the time plus I’d imagine corporate facilities at Eden Park are much better even pre-upgrade.

They should have ambition of Broncos-like numbers honestly, maybe not current day Broncos numbers but 30k+ average.

Knights could also be a 30k+ average club if they had the stadium to accommodate it and a run of success.

Wouldn’t they have grown regardless considering their success following 2006?

I think if the warriors could just get a little investment to upgrade the stand behind the sticks increasing the capacity to 30k they’d be ok.

eden park is too big for the warriors right now with even crowds of 20k can look lost in Eden Park.

The game of soccer in this country is a sleeping giant.. they would have you believe
Soccer is a basket case but its a cash cow as well.
They have these fake academies that play no one but you pay $1000s to put your kid into. Completely pointless except to make some money for some bloke with a shitty accent. I did hear they were going to try and stop them but not sure if that happened.
They have a huge market of kids where size, stength or speed don't matter that much at park level.

In terms of Souths their fans will stick. Even if Bennett leaves them in the state he usually leaves teams. IF they want to play at Allianz let them invest the millions that the Roosters. Waratahs and Sudney FC put in for the construction of the new stadium. Yes I know the govt paid for most of it but those teams using did pay alot to be able to use it. I know mayne people esp souths supporters will not believe it but its true

Not too big for a couple big games each year for a start. Warriors have played there in the past and got pretty good crowds, if they were to take an Anzac Day game or another marquee fixture there these days they’d surely be looking at 40k+.

Go from there, once the upgrades happen they’d be mad not to look at it full time if they get a decent deal. Especially if they can’t get much for Mt Smart in the meantime.

If we’re just talking about Sydney clubs who currently aren’t doing great it’s Parra then daylight. Tigers and Dragons during that 09-12 period drew some pretty big crowds, wouldn’t surprise me if they got their shit together they’d be right up there again.

Really there is potential for growth barring two clubs who are severely limited … (Cronulla and Manly)

The NRL seems to be in good health for the most part

Success for Penrith, Sharks, Manly, Dragons and Tigers are a waste for the NRL. They just don't have the ground capacity that cater for a surge in support.

Dolphins, Roosters, Dogs, Storm and Eels all have potential to increase their crowds.

Souths are a myth.

Yeah since Russell Crowe became unhinged he hasn’t been any good for the club

I'm being serious.
I think Parra would be the winner here anyway, but I also think they should have a unit inside the leagues club that is trying to convert the big Indian and Chinese community to Eels fans.
Gould did a particularly good job this year apparently engaging with the Dogs fans who are Muslim. Similar Parra could/should focus in on Indian and Chinese .
The idea of Indians and Chinese getting interest in our game is laughable.

First few times we got over 30k, last few times was closer to or less than 20k.
Doesn't help that we have some kind of curse playing at Eden Park having only won once out of six games there.

With Perth coming into the comp. I wonder if teams will start taking Warriors games to other parts of NZ again. Probably work well if someone is going to bid for a franchise on the South Island to encourage teams to play a home game over there. Used to be pretty common.

Yehp, 38,412 highest then slowly dropped, 2014 the year they got a couple sub-20k crowds there they played their first 3 Auckland games there. Mind you in those years Mt Smart was only averaging in the 13-16k range.

They own the bar beside Eden Park too so I’d be surprised if they don’t move a game or 2 back there eventually.

These days I’d like to think Anzac Day at Eden Park could get ~50k to be honest.
