ROOKIE Parramatta halfback Brad Murray is no longer a person of interest to police in their investigation into the suspicious betting plunge on last year's NRL Cowboys-Bulldogs game.

Just days after Canterbury forward Ryan Tandy was sacked for refusing to answer the club's questions regarding his betting activity, The Sun-Herald can reveal Murray has been cleared by the NSW Crime Command's Casino and Racing Investigation Unit.

Police spokesmen refused to comment but Eels CEO Paul Osborne confirmed that Murray was no longer a part of the investigation.

''We've been advised by police that he's not a person of interest,'' Osborne said yesterday.

Yes but the NRL are yet to meet with Murray. That will happen after Tandy, Ayoub etc have their day in court. Players are not allowed to bet on games and he has admitted that he has.

NRL players are not allowed to bet on games, Murray was a u20's player at the time and wasn't on a NRL contract.

Well his NYC contract is registered by the NRL and the teams participate in a competition run by the NRL, governed by a salary cap enforced by the NRL.

cleared of what? being involved in the spot fixing?

The report says he is no longer a person of interest, not that he didn't do anything illegal. They have interviewed him and he may have given them all the information he knows, I would assume he has placed a bet with some sort of prior knowledge but may have only had a couple hundred on it and as he has helped in the investigation, the police didn't bother charging him as they are after the organisers.

If a bloke at the pub hears a whisper and puts a ton on the nag, he's done nothing wrong. If a jockey does the same thing, then he is in deep sh*t.

Cleared by police is good...

Now all he needs to do is be cleared by the NRL for breaking their rules on players betting. I'm not convinced he'll get away scot free on that. They probably have to (and should) make an example of him I reckon.

If you google jockey + betting, you'll see that a few have been caught of late betting on races. Some have also been caught betting on the race that they rode in. 3 months is about the average suspension. None to my knowledge have bet on a race that has been spot fixed. Not saying that Brad had prior knowledge of this ...

Nobody is suggesting this, are we Gronk?
It's the astounding coincidence of who all the alledged people were and who they were alledgedly connected to that placed the same bet that blows me away.
An absolutely astounding coincidence.
Anyway, good to see that the fuzz aren't worried about young Brad anymore.

'UnAustralian': Elias bail conditions changed so he can place bets

Rugby league identity John Elias - accused of approaching a witness in the investigation into illegal betting on last year's Bulldogs and Cowboys match - was granted bail at Bankstown Local Court this morning.
Elias was arrested yesterday for contacting TAB SportsBet Media Manager Glenn Munsie in alleged breach of his bail conditions.
His new bail conditions are that he not contact or approach Mr Munsie or anyone in a domestic relationship with Mr Munsie.

The magistrate said that the accused was not to approach, contact, intimidate or harass Parramatta player Brad Murray and former Herald journalist John Schell.
He is also not allowed within 100 metres of the TAB headquarters, which are in Harris Street, Ultimo.
From the dock, Elias expressed his concern that his bail conditions might prevent him from having a bet at a TAB outlet.
His barrister Giovanni Galluzzo said "it would be unAustralian your honour" in relation to his client not being able to place a bet at the TAB.
His conditions were varied so that he would still be able to bet.
Elias and player Sam Ayoub will appear in Downing Centre Local Court on April 7.

It would still be interesting to know exactly why Murray was a 'person of interest' in the first place, I guess we, the average punter, will never know.

How does he go anyway? does he have the potential to be worth all the trouble?

if I had to take a stab I would say because he was seen on CCTV footage placing a bet on the outcome of the alleged fix a few days before the game and may have even been the first one to place that bet during that week.
