Opinion SMH Top 50 NRL Players - Season 2024

The Sydney Morning Herald are running a series of articles this week nominating, in the opinion of its judges, the top 50 players in the NRL for this coming season.

The panel of judges - Andrew Johns, Darren Lockyer, Brad Fittler, Allana Ferguson, Emma Lawrence, Danika Mason, Roy Masters, Andrew Webster, Michael Chammas and Andrew Pengilly.

They arrived at the list by each judge voting for his/her top 30 players, with each being given points (e.g. Player No. 1 gets 30 points, Player No. 2 gets 29 points, down to player no. 30 getting 1 point). They the added up all the points and voila the list. They noted in the initial article(source: https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/best-of-the-best-the-top-50-players-in-the-nrl-20240218-p5f5u1.html), where points were tied "we sorted it by alphabetical order."

This is from today's article (source: https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/best-of-the-best-the-top-50-players-in-the-nrl-20240218-p5f5u1.html).

Players ranked Nos. 41-50 -

41. Jake Trbojevic (13 points);
42. Apil Koroisau (12 points);
43. Dallin Watene-Zelezniak (11 points);
44. Jack Wighton (11 points);
45. David Fifita (10 points);
46. Jeremiha Nanai (8 points);
47. Damien Cook (6 points);
48. Haumole Olakau'atu (5 points);
49. Selwyn Cobbo (4 points); and
50. Tom Flegler (4 points).

I'll post each grouping when it becomes available. As I do not have access to the article electronically, I won't be posting the blurb they have written about each player listed.

To'o is a hard player to rank.

Scores a try in two of every three games

His team has won three straight premierships with his grunt work being the catalyst for the attack.

Top 10 is pretty good, some questionable positions in the rest of the list...

DCE at 11?
Not sure I would have Teddy ahead of Edwards anymore
I didn't see much of Ben Hunt last year but is he really in the top 30?
Mam might be a bit low...

Farcical that Moses is 29th and Ilias was missed completely.

Also most of the “judging” panel is laughable.

Well the judging panel is made up of those who work for Channel 9 (e.g. Mason, Johns, Fittler) or the SMH (e.g. Chammas, Masters) as they are all under the same group ownership. Not saying they are good or what not, merely the why.

DWZ in the top 50 is a wild one. One of the best finishers in the game and carries it strong, but is a complete liability on defense. Got skinned in both our finals losses in 2023.

Wayde Egan should have had his place - Egan>DWZ all day long. Egan is a jet. In fact if he didn't get injured/concussed so often, I'd have him over Grant in my team all day long. Koroisau is a better, more consistent hooker than Grant, as well.
