Smith Stars But Magpies Too Good
HIS team won by nearly 50 points but Souths Logan coach Paul Bramley saved his biggest accolade for a player in the rival camp.
Bramley, whose Magpies outfit belted Burleigh 58-10 at Meakin Park on Saturday, had high praise for tough Bears hooker Scott Smith.
He saved four tries at least, Bramley said.
He would have made 50 tackles. I was sitting there watching him and thinking I cant believe this kid hasnt played NRL.
Even though the game was gone, he didnt give in. Im more impressed with him than any of my own players.
In the lead up to Saturdays top-of-the-table showdown, Bramley stressed to his players the importance of bringing their A game.
We spoke about how good Burleigh had been. We knew we had to bring our A game and thats what we did.
I dont want to sound arrogant, but Burleigh werent that bad. We beat them at the jump. We just shocked them early and they didnt recover.
The Magpies put on a wonderful spectacle of attacking rugby league, crossing for 10 tries in the huge round six win.
Brett Kelly, sporting his brand new Nomis boots, landed nine goals and scored a try for good measure.
The Souths Logan players chose the perfect time to put on a show, with Canberra Raiders CEO Don Furner and head coach David Furner in the crowd.
Coach Furner would no doubt have been thrilled with the form of several Raiders in the Souths Logan side.
Slippery centre Phil Graham scored three tries, enhancing his strong bid for an NRL return.
It was always going to be a matter of time before he got his confidence back with his knee, Bramley said.
Hes been down but he was back to his instinctive best.
The highlight of Grahams hat-trick was a stunning 90 metre intercept try for the Magpies, who led 34-10 at half-time.
The Magpies were able to shine despite the late withdrawal of regular five-eighth Josh McCrone.
With Raiders playmaker Marc Herbert suffering a leg injury in Fridays NRL match, Canberra officials opted to take no risks with the man they see as Herberts replacement next week.
Adam Wright, a stronger performer for the Magpies in the FOGS Cup, came into the Souths Logan side for McCrone.
Wright wore the No. 6 jersey but started from the bench.
The reliable Phil Dennis switched from lock to five-eighth and turned in another outstanding display.
