He's a freeking genius that Hagan. If you have the two best players in the world in your team, you could win a premiership. :sarcasm:

I know there is a lot of sentiment surrounding Sunday, however, I dont have a problem with letting Robson go.
Agreed or work massively on his kicking game. He's alright as a link man and support player and his defence isn't the worst (2 of those 3 attributes were missing on Sunday though) but that doesn't warrant him being a 1st grade half. If he develops a good accurate kicking game, he can have the spot for as long as he wants

I am a far from being a Hagan fan but he does have a point. We have not won a comp since 86 which coincidentally is the last time we had a top notch halfback.

The problem I see in the scenario is that both the players that we admire ie, Kris Keating and Daniel Mortimer are natural 5/8ths that we are trying to convert into a halfback.

The other problem I see with a player like Thurston is that he is a dominant type of halfback who may take the attacking game away from players like Mateo and Hayne. If he was available I would much prefer a player like Cooper Cronk who would be a better fit for our team.

I think Mateo and Hayne could still be well involved.

I watched a replay of the game again last night and probably saw about 3-4 opportunities for the JT "show and go".

Plus JT sweats on his kick chase...no one else like it in the business.

The other quality that JT would bring to our team is the champion competititve quality. When a game is on the line he ups the ante.

Hayne has that to a point, but it is much harder for a fullback to impose himself to the degree a halfback can.

One sign of it is in his goalkicking. he isn't the best kicker in the game but when a game is in the balance he is the player most liklely to kick the crucial goal in the comp.

He has that will to win, and the skills to achieve it, that we are probably lacking.

I have believed since 2001 that we won;t win a comp while Cayless is captain. I was hoping like hell I'd be proven wrong on Sunday but there is an element of leadership lacking there that Thurston could bring IMO.

But as everyone says- at what cost? How many plaers would we lose? What team harmony? who knows.

If they get him though, I would be pretty excited TBH. It would bring a toughness and competitiveness to our team to go with the talent IMO.

I agree our kicking was found out and its exactly why I dont rate Robson, his kicking game seems to regularly find the fullback where as Morts normally finds the turf. Morts kicking game was off on Sunday but I wouldn't be too harsh on him because his kicking game has been very good over the last 2 months

I'm not disputing the fact that Robbo is at the top of his game atm, but we will never win a grand final with Robson at 7 imo

KK has so much more to offer in attack than Robson,

Robbo will only be a fill-in halfback until we get a better one or our #6 takes full control ala Fittler or Lockyer.

However, what he does bring to this team is

a) A great link man who is able to get the ball quickly to the people that needs it.
b) Great defender although he did miss one in the GF

But his kicking game is very poor.

In saying that, he is a better version of Finch and much cheaper.

We do not have a natural kicker in the team since Tim Smith.

We don't grubber in goal or we don't get repeat 6's.

Hayne is a great kick clearer but he is not natural with his short kicking game.

TBH, I'd rather have a cheap Tim Smith than sign a Thurston.

Too much baggage and I think he would bang heads with alot of the other players.

Hagan .

Paying overs for an ageing half at the end of his career is not going to be what parra needs.

Didn't do the Cowboys any good in helping them make the finals/grand final... and we'd lose out across the rest of our squad (who did make the Grand Final) is we signed a "marquee" halfback at JT's market price.

Do not need...

6. Mortimer
7. Keating

This halves combination has me very excited about next year.

Both have the same fearless attitude and work ethic and are both talented.

If we can stay relatively injury free these 2 boys will go a long way to leading us to a premiership!

On Robson, completely happy to have him as the backup halfback as long as he is happy with that, great reward for his year but Keating offers us much more imo!

Why does this man still have a column in the paper!

So Michael, what did you think of the GF?

Agreed 100 per cent.

I just don't think the Cost Benefit Analysis on Thurston would support that kind of recruitment.

Someone posted earlier that if we had Thurston on Sunday we would have won ... but I think the same thing could be said of Cronk. I think a solid $300,000 halfback would be just as effective as a $500,000+ halfback most of the time.

If we had Thurston on Sunday, we would've been stripped of all our competition pts!

Thurston is asking for 700k, as good as he is that is ridiculous money. We have him and Hayne and no one else.

yep, replace a player that misses tackles in a big game, and who puts in nothing selfish kicks in big games that you pay 100k to with a player who does likewise but is worth 600k, and throw in that he will want anderson gone within 12 months.

Imo, bad move.

Thurston is simply not coming to Parra. I don't know why all these stories keep coming up about it, but it's all fantasy.
