You obviously weren't a fan of Parra before Smith took over your basketcase of a club.

True, we were sh*thouse for so long after the 80's. Brian Smith came in and resurrected our club, I don't think any other coach could have done it as well as he did. Since he's come, we have been in two grand finals and been minor premiers twice.

I dunno what planet people in this thread are on but I sure as hell would not have Smith back at Parra and until he proves otherwise by winning a premiership he is, in my book, the king of the choke. I dont know of any other coach in history who has taken so many sides to the grand final and not won one friggin premiership.

Some who have played under him described their Grand Final day dressing room experience as being like visiting a funeral home.

Those people saying look what he done for this club and look what he done for that club, are we talking about the same Brian Smith here ? The best thing he did for Parra was pack his bags and F*** off out of the place, the place is still bears the scars of 10 years under his leadership !

One thing I would like to see is the Dragons play the Roosters in the GF, at least then someone is going to loose the choker tag and we will find out if the Dragons cursed Brian or if Brian cursed the Dragons, will be very interesting indeed, I reckon it will go to golden point if they meet !!

Your kidding me right?? If Smithy hadn't of come to Parramatta, we would be the worst team in the NRL for the past 10 years.
If you think forging the best attacking team of the modern age (or ever) in 2001 is a nothing achievement....well, let's just say I think anyone will disagree with you.

As for Brian Smith's grand finals record, honestly it's quite obvious he has been unlucky on those occasions; i.e. going up against an all-star Broncos team two years in a row that no other team would have beaten except the Raiders, and in 2001 going up against the team with the best halfback ever on the wrong day. What proves to me this 'choke' tag is false is that in the 2001 GF Parra were 24-nil down at halftime and came back to lose 24-30.

Refued a contract extension? Like Newcastle could compete with any kind of offer the Roosters could throw up.

Like i said he gets his team into the finals and then they choke on him,the players are the chokers not the coach.
Rubbish. Saints were abysmal in the 83 decider. In our 89 prelim final collapse, Smith hooked John Simon for missing 2 field goals. Simon was directing our attack superly - who could forget the Schifcofske try that Simon set up? No Simon - we collapsed.
In 01 we were so unprepared avan f*cking Rudder looked like a test player. Then we were diabolial for the next 5 years, until he walked out and JT took over.

Smith was against promoting Jarryd Hayne into first grade - over the likes of Delaney and Ash Graham

Smith decimated Newcastle then pissed off.

Winning premierships is not about being a good guy - if he does so then he has earned it. But if one of your career highlights is being out-coached by Michael Hagan - it say a lot.

are you really this stupid?
Yes

There's only so much the coach can do...he can give them the best preparation in the world but if the players go out there and miss a crucial tackle or bomb a try then it's another grand final down the drain.

Brian Smith is a genius imo.

As if they couldn't match the Roosters offer. It is a simple fact the Knights management didn't believe Smith was worth the money despite Smith turning the club around.

The Roosters have a gigantic war chest, while the Knights are financial minnows. Newcastle can't afford to take the gamble of signing a coach for four years like the Roosters can. If it goes pear-shaped Easts have more than enough cash to just pay out his contract and look elsewhere, the Knights do not have that luxury.

It was hardly a situation where he wasn't wanted by Newcastle, the Roosters just produced an offer that we could not compete with.

Either way, you can't blame Smith for accepting the offer. You make it sound like he did something very wrong by the Knights. Anyone else in the same position would have done exactly the same thing.

I don't blame him one bit, but the way it was phrased made it appear as if the Knights had done wrong by Smith which is not the case.

Lolll loudstrat he coached us to a grandfinal and our players got 'overwhelmed '. Hardly his fault. His obviously a good coach just look at what he's done for every club he's joined.
Overwhelmed? Isn't that a coaches job to fix that? Hagen didn't have that problem. Jack Gibsons sides never got overwhelmed. He had the best attacking machine in history. Overwhelmed

When your a coach.. not even getting your team from the wooden spoon to the GF can keep the critics at bay..

Tough life for a coach aint it..
Smith is the coach you employ to change your club from cellar dwellers to semi finalists. Once there, you punt him and get someone to win one. Smith had a decade at Parra - one GF. IN his last years, he took us to the semis a couple of times. With largely the same squad, coaches of the calibre of Michael Hagan and Jason Taylor did the same - both to the prelim final - so better than Smith in those years. And we made the GF under Daniel Anderson, and the players certainly were not f*cking overawed when Fui rampaged over the Billion Dollar Babies in the 75th minute!

Your kidding me right?? If Smithy hadn't of come to Parramatta, we would be the worst team in the NRL for the past 10 years.
Smith came - so did 4 internationals from Canterbury, Aaron Raper, John Simon and some juniors called Lyon, Hindmarsh and Cayless. Ron Hilditch would have taken them to the finals ffs!

and in 2001 going up against the team with the best halfback ever on the wrong day
You don't remember much do you. That was Ben Kennedy day if anything.
Great coach in my view, reminds me of Brownie.

GO
 Smith took over from Freddie. Enough said. Plus they got rid of Mason. And Mini finally had a good run without injury.

Easts underachieved last year. Smithy has done well this year, no denying that - but he ain't no f*cking super coach.

I will agree that the Roosters massively underachieved last year.

Smith has done a wonderful job with individual players like FPN, SKD, Carney, and Friend. I don't know too many coaches that would have made FPN lose weight, or played Carney at fullback for most of the season to improve his running game, or included the worlds worst player in Kouparitses in the side to allow Friend to ease his way back to form.

What I like most about Smith is he allows players to play their natural game and builds game plans around it, and build their confidence in the process. Compare this to Ricky Stupid who completely suppressed players abilities and confidence at both the Roosters and the Sharks with his stupid game plans.

Smithy has game plans, and its up to the players to execute them.

Smith shouldnt be getting the blame .

Smith should never be blame, he makes good game plans but sometimes idiots like Pearce go away from the game plan especially against good defense teams and just bomb.

I feel the sign of a good coach is guiding a team to top 4 spots in the regular season, rather than the number of premierships. A good coach will take a team into a position where they can win the comp, but once the finals come around I think its up to the players to stand up in those finals matches.

Brian Smith always seems to get the best out of his team. Great coach.
