If it's a Saints-Roosters final, it will be a battle of two of the finest coaches in the modern game. I'd love to see Smithy finally bag one. And what a great rags to riches story for the Roosters and Carney.

In Bennett's case, a win or a loss won't change people's opinions about his reputation --- can anyone dispute his credentials as the game's best coach?

When your a coach.. not even getting your team from the wooden spoon to the GF can keep the critics at bay..

Tough life for a coach aint it..

Not a huge fan of Brian Smith but has done a great job at the Roosters this season. His performances in Grand Finals isn't too crash hot.

1989/89: Hull lost to Widnes
1992: St George lost to Brisbane
1993: St George lost to Brisbane
2001: Parramatta lost to Newcastle

Hopefully St George Illawarra win this evening and win again next week so Jesus can get the hat-trick against him, this time Jesus will be on the right side of the fence.

Can you really blame Smith for the 92, 93 and 2001 losses?
In 92,93 it was all the broncos and the raiders, every other team was making up the numbers.
In 2001 he came up against the the best halfback of all time on the wrong day.

with all the talk about the guy being unable to win a premiership, what's your opinion of him?

I think he's a legend. He took an ordinary saints team to two sucessive Grand Finals. He turned Parra from a laughing stock to genuine contenders. In Parra 2001 he created the best attacking side of the modern era, but was ambushed in the final. Despite conceeding 24 unanswered points in the first half, he was able to get his team back in it, and have one set at the end to potentially force sudden death. At Newcastle, he turned the club around. Now at Easts, he has transformed a team from spooners to grand finalists. Win or lose he'll go down as a true coaching great

No, you can't BUT it's not a good coaching record going into a Grand Final is it?

In 2001 he coached one of the best teams ever that didn't win a Grand Final.

Put it this way, I'd rather someone like for arguments sake ... let's say ... Wayne Bennett's record going into a Grand Final.

Those people saying look what he done for this club and look what he done for that club, are we talking about the same Brian Smith here ? The best thing he did for Parra was pack his bags and F*** off out of the place, the place is still bears the scars of 10 years under his leadership !

You obviously weren't a fan of Parra before Smith took over your basketcase of a club.

I think he is an excellent coach who specialises in turning average teams into finals contenders. The reason why he hasn't won a premiership is that his teams have never been the best team in the comp (look at the 2010 Roosters as an example). He also hasn't had a massive amount of luck. Having said that I think he did have a few coaching deficiencies earlier in his career but he has fixed them now and is the real deal.

Rothfield must be getting excited over Smith's ability to get his team, against all odds, into the grand final.

I don't care if he never wins a grand final,he is quite clearly one of the greatest coaches ever, this guy could take over the reigns of any team in the NRL and get them to the top 8,even the Sharks.

Saints in '93 were favorites to win the comp. I'm not sold on him, especially after what he did to Newcastle last year.

Like i said he gets his team into the finals and then they choke on him,the players are the chokers not the coach.

It was Brownie that first draped the choker tag round the dragon's neck

Sick of hearing the newcastle bs. The Knights refused Smith a contract extension and let him secure his future at the roosters.

The Roosters had faith in Smith, and despite what Smith achieved at the Knights they still didn't have faith in him. Get over it.
