So what do you think 'happened' in Donnie Darko?

my take was that donnie was nuts before the engine hit his room though, correct? I don't understand the 'why' behind the psychiatrist saying that he wasn't on medication towards the end of the movie...

what was the role of the fat girl? The movie has a lot more to it then the timeline/rabbit storyline.

I think that the characters in the movie are so rich even though they aren't strongly developed. That for me is the interesting part of the movie. There are a lot of contrasting characters, the loose cannon teacher as opposed to the strict one, donnie as opposed to the rough kids, donnie and his sister and it goes on. I think there is a lot of social comment in the background, basically.

It's also interesting watching it again how the people behind him are placed. There is an ongoing theme throughout the film of left vs right and the good people are usually always on one side of donnie and the bad on the other.

Loved it. One of the classic cult movies. And I agree with Balmain Boy re the interpretation and with others who say that the original version is superior to the director's cut.

I've got the Director's Cut on DVD and the director's commentary is quite interesting, as they usually are.
