HERAKLIO, 11 August - Australia and Tunisia drew 1-1 in their opening encounter of the Men's Olympic Football competition at Pankritio Stadium on Wednesday night.

Australia opened the scoring in the 45th minute through John ALOISI (AUS), who connected with an Ahmad ELRICH (AUS) cross to head his team in to the lead.

The goal opened up what had been a tight midfield battle as Tunisia fought to get level in the second half.

The Olyroos counter attacked at every opportunity but were unable to find the net a second time.

In the 69th minute a weak clearance from Australian goalkeeper Eugene GALEKOVIC fell to Ali ZITOUNI (TUN) who made no mistake in bringing the scores level.

During the last 15 minutes the Tunisians pushed for the winner but could not break down the Australian defence.

Both teams now go into Saturday's matches knowing that a good opportunity to secure a spot in the second stage has been wasted.

good result

A good result? You're kidding arent you?

People accepting mediocrity like this is the reason soccer in this country is up sh1t creek.

From all accounts, Australia sat back and defended a one-goal lead in the second half and you people are in here saying it's a good result?

We could have gone on with the job and instead, super coach Farina's defensive tactics let us down. Thankfully, Fwankie boy should be given the boot after this tournament - after achieving a big fat f**k all.

If it was a country that took the sport half seriously, he would have been sacked a long time ago.

From all reports it's a game we should of won.

What is it with Australia and it's defensive tactics. Everytime we score or hit the lead we creap back into our shell.

Shutup Pepstar. You're a deadset idiot. Australia have proven in recent years that we have the team and commitment to beat almost anyone on our day. It's just a matter of finding consistency and being able to get more friendlies.

I'm not disappointed in the result, although, of course, a win would have been better. Our lady folk went down 1-0 to Brazil. I'm not up on Women's soccer, but I assume Brazil are just as good without the Y chromosone?
