Solomon Islands

Anything happening there regarding the development of RL?

Don't think I’ve heard of any RL News coming out of the islands for what seems like years since a planned game between Vanuatu possibly 5+ years ago?

Always strikes me as bizarre and so very RL in that a country with a large(for the pacific islands) population of 720k isn’t targeted more for development considering that the Solomon Islands population is more than 3 times that of Samoa and 6 times that of Tonga as well as being just 200k short of Fiji.

With all the rugby talent in both codes that comes out of Fiji, Samoa and Tonga it just strikes me as a huge missed opportunity of not developing the game of RL on the Solomon Islands especially when we have development and pathways for the hunters for PNG and the silktails for Fiji.

For me there should be school RL clinics being run throughout the islands as well as long-term plans to run a team out of Honiara in the Queensland cup.

In the short-term a Solomon Islands team could even be entered into the digicel cup alongside a Bougainville based side but that’s for another discussion.

There are works trying to establish the code there. Firstly, there will be a Men's & Women’s team representing SI at the upcoming Pacific Games.

There is also a commitment to put a full time RL development officer in the SI as part of the games' legacy (https://www.oceanianoc.org/press/onoc-supports-development-officers-of-24-sports-in-solomon-islands).

RL is also part of the SI's High Performance programs & Bond University has been supporting this work (

The SIRL did have plans for Schools prior to COVID and Pacifique Treize has tried working with the SIRL, though again COVID meant only limited activity could take place.

Agree that there is so much more that could be done. With Bougainville hoping to gain independence, there is a real opportunity for the SIRL & BRL to work closer together.
