Hey Tony Peters just announced on the news that saints are chasing sonny bill williams. we'll win 12 premierships in a row if we sign him. i've already started praying
Anyone heard any more? when does he come off his bulldogs contract and how much is he on now and how much do you think saints can afford to pay?

The thing is that EVERY other club is chasing him not just us. He comes off contract at the end of this year but I have no idea what he's on. It won't be a huge amount but the Bullcheats will be upping that now he's burst onto the scene like he has. I'd be surprised if his shoulder lasts the next 3 seasons though. Personally I think we have more than enough depth in the second row as it is, and with what it would cost us to buy him we could pick up 2 or 3 handy players in positions such as the halves where we don't have as much depth now that Withers has gone.

Sonny-Bill will probably become the face of an "exciting new building development". Isn't that why all the Dogs like to stay at C*nterbury for less than other offers?? Or is it fringe-benefits like travel - trips to Coffs Harbour are fuuuuun!!

I gave up a long time ago on ever seeing a Saints Marquee Signing. We've got "talented juniors" now

oh how good it is that someone else on this forum has some sense and doesnt have their head up there arse. what wrong with or current depth.

and we also have to pay barret, and he costs us a fortune, if we got sonny bill, we could say good bye to most of the other young tough forwards we have.

norrie, hendo, wheatly and creagh would probably all be sacrificed for one player, who could very likely have a very short career due to probable endless shoulder problems

When opfficials start taking a look at that big shoulder hit of his, Sonny Bill is going to spend more and more time on the sideline.
I don't really see the need for a big marquee signing, SS is right (I know he's being sarcastic), we've got local juniours, many of whom other clubs consider marquee signings.

Lets get rid of the Talented juniours like Bailey, Thompson, Timmins, Ryles, Gasnier, Cooper, Hornby, Sims, Creagh, Young, Head (et al) and buy some real talent?

Sonny Bill is going to be linked with every club in the NRL and a few in England until he signs a new contract, don't take any notice of it.

Drake, I'm still of the firm belief that Saints need to infuse the juniors with some "outside" blood. You can't win the comp with locals alone...

For example, look what the signing of Ben Kennedy did for Newcastle...

I agree with that sentiment, but who do we sacrifice to buy big?
Many will say Santa, (I prefer Santa mark II Mr Gasnier), but I would hate to lose one of our big home grown boys only to have them carve it up at another club.
I don't think any other club(s) has contributed so many high class players as St George and St George Illawarra. Have a look at how many players have come up through the Sheilas or dragons ranks and have made it big elsewhere.
I'm a firm believer in support of local league and grass roots, local young kids aspiring to play for the Dragons is my hope. If we become the roosters, then local pride will fail. I know the St George area isn't getting as many locals in as the Illawarra, but it's a massive area down here, between the Illawarra comp and Group 7. I'm quite proud that two kangaroos are from my new home suburb, that they're still local and I'm damn proud to see them in the Red V.

I would like to see Gaz:
a) Stop worrying about being Reg Gasnier's heir apparent and just be Mark Gasnier
b) Stop doing that stupid jig on the spot when he is contemplating stepping someone.
c) Play a season or most of one, then act like a primadonna that achieved something.
d)take a paycut as a way of thanking Saints for their patience with his injuries and stupidity, and his embarrassment of St George
e) If a to d are not possible; Piss off to England and free up some cash to get Sonny Bill.

ranting over.

Crap.

He already got fined $50 000 and that was about $49 000 too much.

The only embarrassment in that whole saga was seeing the CEO of The Dragons chuck one of our players to the wolves.

IM one of Gasnier's biggest fans, always will be. I think he could be the greatest centre we have had since his uncle.

But his body aint up to NRL level anymore. His shoulder, Ankle, foot, colar bone, legs. are made of paper.

if he could somehow manage a year or 2 injury free, he will win a competition on his own.

If mark does not last this season, he wont be a Dragon in 06 , due to his body, and yes the money he is on will be wisely spent, as would Timmins money.

Then Thommos the year after.

There is a fair bit of money going to be freed up in 06, and 07.

Sonny.. Come get it.

That may be so, but Thommo took a paycut so we could keep this joker, and how many games has he played since.
There is no question that he can do well on his day, but we cut Barrett down all the time, and he has done far more for Saints than Gaz has. Ryles stayed on a lower wage to thank saints for helping him out and keeping faith in him.
gasnier's gratitude...I feel stale, I want to go to england, f**k me fire up. :?
What if it were Cooper that was the injury prone faint heart who wanted to leave for more money instead of Gasnier?
