It does. League still rates its pants off but everyone thinks its dead. 'Goodwill' isn't tied to the actual health of the game but rather it's a perception of the product. If the perception is bad, it can reduce the value of the code to something well below its actual commercial value.

On the flipside, a large amount of goodwill can see people willing to lose money to broadcast something. Look at the AFL.

League rates it's pants off in two states.

AFL is the number one sport in the rest. If i am looking to maximize my ratings share on a national level what sport am I going to pony up big money for ?

Also, who is losing money broadcasting AFL ? We may have a better product but that means sh*t if only qld and nsw are watching consistantly week after week.

The Sydney Market is worth more than the Melbourne Market and the SEQLD market is worth more than Perth and Adelaide combined. The 'Two States' thing is a crock.

Since no one is competing with them for Pay TV sports rights anymore, once league and Union are dead they can pay whatever they want for AFL rights. They can kill off this golden goose at their leisure now.

How are they killing soccer or union ?

They are the only ones who broadcast them in this country.

Both of those sports are being killed by a lack of free to air coverage.

Both lack the local infrastructure to broadcast Australian content without the assistance of another broadcaster. They'd have to invest heavily in equipment, staff, office space etc* before even considering such a move. And even then, News would have to allow the rights to be competed for openly and transparently.

It'd be nice if they did, but I don't see anything suggesting they will. ESPN has been broadcasting here since Pay TV started but doesn't have anything besides renting a studio for a couple of shows to show for it.

I wish. Seriously, I wish. I can't see the game going forward until we get News Corp out of the ownership structure.

Setanta have shown a they are willing to be aggressive in the European market. So they are obviously cashed up.

sure they lack infrastructure , but many channels outsource the filming of outside broadcasts. I doubt everything fox sports show is filmed by them.

ESPN is a hail mary , im simply pointing out though that fox sports dont have an exclusive sports platform on Foxtel. They are two seperate companies. And there could well be future players we dont even know about.

Infact with multi channeling well in effect on free to air TV , we could well see some of the free TV channel have dedicated sports channels in the future.

Did I mention Soccer? It's hardly dying...

The 'Golden Goose' is League. Union is dying because it's a sh*t sport and no one cares anymore.

And your source for this would be ?

Are you basing this on advertising revenue or population base ? Sure a lot of people live in se qld, where did they come from ? Victoria ?

Both Advertising Revenue and Population Base.

The OzTam area for Brisbane covers 3 million people, Perth 1.6m and Adelaide 1.2m. The OzTam website has a breakdown of the areas.

There's been articles posted here in the past that have indicated that NNSW is worth more to advertisers than Adelaide as well.

As indicated by the generally terrible ratings for AFL matches in SEQLD, and the rather impressive ratings for RL matches in the region (Four times a year advertisers are guaranteed a 500k+ audience), the region is still full of RL fans. Most migration is actually from Western Sydney and Northern NSW these days anyways, now that the Victorian and SA 'rust belts' have pretty much been cleared out.

So union is a sh*t sport that nobody cares about but league is being killed by a giant corporation that owns half of it but who still wants to kill it so it can what ? Lose more money on it ? Pump it up so it can sell it ? Drive fans away so the tv rights cost less in the hope that they can lure fans back and make a profit later on ?

You may be right but i just can't see cut throat business types paying over for AFL just for the hell of it. It doesn't make sense that they are doing it for goodwill. The only logical reason would be that they think that they can make money on it. Greed is good after all. ( Couldn't help it, wall street was on foxtel this morning)

You are aware of the concepts of 'intangible assets' and 'goodwill' yes?

Yes it does. Nine bidded massive on AFL to force Seven and Ten to do likewise, and it worked a treat. Seven and Ten were willing to do so because of the popularity of flogball in the media and the good will it would generate for both networks in holding the 'flagship' competition of Australian Sport.

So your saying they are doing it for the prestige of saying that they are the AFL broadcasters and are willing to lose cash to do it ? It is possible but it is a hard sell to the shareholders.

You don't think the popularity of AFL in melb, perth, hobart, adelaide and its ability to provide a platform to emerging markets eg sydney and brisbane had something to so with it ?

The Centenary celebrations have gone well in my opinion.

There has actually been a few columns written by journalists, a couple of them union buffs, regarding how well league has sold its history this year.

It really has been great how well educated i have become about the game this year.

Untill the last two weeks, the game had been treated quite well in the press, nothing great, but nothing terrible.

Then Sonny and Mark wanted to quit, the league can't pro actively help that.

AFL has also taken a lashing in the press over the GC adventure and the shocking crowd they had and their har nosed push into town. Well here in QLD they have anyway.

Unfortunately, as seen by the myriad of posts on this forum regarding negetive issues, negetivity is what people want to talk about.

The press is still stuck on the league is struggiling stories that proved so popular during the super league war and league fans love to hate them.

And when Gallop comes out and says unhelpfull, but honest, statements about the impending death of Sydney clubs, you can't blame the press for printing that.

The nonsence about sydney crowds has mainly been stirred up by fans, many on this forum. In fact considering that most league and sports writers read this forum i could say its a direct result of posts in here.

Sydney crowds arent even down though, thats the bad thing.

what has happened is..

league has closed the gap on AFL. it used to be that league was far behind and no threat to AFL. now we are edging closer and all of a sudden fans and journos expect crowds etc to mirror that of the AFL, when they havnt been that way in a century and probably never will be due to the nature of our product ie it looks so good on television.

It would be nice if there were more feel good stories. but unfortunately they dont sell.

having said that, origins great rating should have been bleeted about. The NRL shoudl have sent press releases out.

Hobart?

As in Hobart that's smaller than Canberra, Wollongong, Gosford, Newcastle, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast Hobart?

Part of it comes with the fact that controlling atleast one Friday Night Football Broadcast was regarded as a key component by Channel 7 in giving them the edge over 9 to become the highest rating TV station. Since RL didn't put its rights to tender (Which, if you cast your mind back to 2005, pissed Stokes off something severe), Seven desperately needed the AFL rights. There's a sh*tload of prestige that comes with being the Number one station.

Ten makes practically nothing off of its Saturday night Swans and Lions broadcasts btw...
