South Sydney have their sights set on Dean Widders with Rugby League Week reporting that the Eels interchange specialist "is set to receive a huge sign-on fee from the Rabbitohs".

Meanwhile, Widders has credited Jason Taylor for saving his career.

"When I got dropped to Premier League last year I was massively down on confidence. But with JT as coach I turned it around. He taught me to start enjoying my footy again and have a smile".

Widders said that Taylor was a perfectionist and the Eels were concentrating a lot more on the "little things done that Brian (Smith) probably took for granted".

Jason Taylor will be the assistant coach at South Sydney next year.

Geez, going to Souths is a big gamble to take, just to follow a coach.

far from it

if he loves playing under JT, plus can earn 50k more, who are we to judge?

being at parra hasnt guaranteed him success or a 1st grade birth all the time either.

I wouldn't be surprised if JT is appointed head coach for Souths next year.
Widders would be a sad loss for the club, but he hasn't had anywhere near the impact this year that he has had in previous years, though he aint alone there.
Regrettably I think if he's heart isn't in playing for the Eels anymore then better to let him go than pay too much to keep him.

Iam thinking he is guarenteed the head coaching position if Mcrae cant show any signs of improvement.

Yeah my thoughts exactly.
Not such a bad position for JT to be when you think about it. Souths should sign a few decent players for next year and they can only improve on the performance of this year.
Though long term, any position at Souths, be it player or coaching staff, will eventually end in tears.

Really.. Souths want ANYONE they can get their hands on...
Deano is past it...Time to move on and for the Club to change direction. Been good.... Operative word being 'been'. That's just my opinion. He is far too predictable..

Dean has only been good in 2005. Before this he was up and down without really doing anything.

Wish him all the best but we dont need him. I'm happy if he stays, happy if he goes. If he can get more than roughly 110-120k (all I would pay) elsewhere I say let him go.

I dont want widders 2 go. Just because JT resurected his career dosent mean he should follow him all the way 2 redfern. He could even take morrisons place permanently when he goes.

Forget about Dean starting instead of Morrison that is a joke hindy hould have to make 70 tackles a game instead of 50, we need a workaholic to fill his spot.I say if he wants to go and make some extra money no worries, souths are not going to play finals for at least 5 years, so good luck. Dean has been great for us but he can be replaced by Riddell as a running backrower or Mateo off the bench. I dont think Dean will ever have the fitness to be a 80 min player

JT will be a bigger loss than Widders. I can see JT becoming a good coach. Wouldn't surprise me if Fitzi ends up chasing his signature in the future
