This is an area where the NRL has created a serious problem, through the poor application of the knock on rule. We have countless knock backs, ball dropped back etc, ruled as knock ons.

It was a mis-timed kick by Marshall, but a genuine Field Goal attempt wouldn't be possible any other way. It had to be a Try.

Makes no sense. If a player dropped the ball in a tackle, managed to kick it after it bounced and it goes 30 meters when one of his players runs onto it picks it up and scores you would consider that had to be a try as well?

I don't disagree with that. But from now on if a player drops the ball and kicks it after it bounces, do the same rules apply?

If it happens that quick, then yes.

A drop kick is defined as kicking the ball as it contacts the ground, or as soon as it starts to rise after contacting the ground. Which is what happened in this case.

Why should intent be taken into account with this play and not every other. You're saying "he didn't intend it to be a dropkick so even though it has all the characteristics of a dropkick it isn't". Should all plays be ruled on intent?

Can someone who doesn't think it should've been a try explain how what Benji did is any different to any dropkick seen in a game?

The situation of the game. The type of kick attempted. Plenty to say it was a knock on. If the Dragons player doesn't try for the ball it dribbles out & is called knock on

But would that same interpretation apply 20 metres out from there own line?

I'm not going to use Benji in this example cause we all know he gets special preference but say Peter Wallace does the same thing 10 metres out from his own line and it ends up in a try(so we go to the video ref) does it apply?

Is it still applicable to go for a drop goal there as it was for Marshall?....Because all in all they both had the same amount of intent to hit a drop goal, so does position on the field matter? Surely intent matters here cause everyone knows Benji wasn't going for a drop goal. He missed the ball. Plain and simple.

It's difficult to accidently kick a field goal. It's not difficult to accidently drop the ball or accidently get someone high or most other things you see on a field.

If you drop the ball onto the ground in front of you when you are tying to kick for touch or take a tackle it's a knock on. If you do it when you are kicking a field goal it's a different situation. That's the difference i see with intent in this situation

I can't think of a rule that suggests otherwise.

People, if you can watch a rerun of the game, or have it taped, watch the replay of the shot from behind over Benji's left shoulder, the ball changes direction (slightly) as it hits his calf on the way down. Video ref = nuffy for calling attempted field goal attempt but the result is the same.

Calf = part of the boot.

Either a dropkick (defined as kicking the ball as it contacts the ground, or as soon as it starts to rise after contacting the ground - thanks snappy) is legal or its not. Intent doesn't come into it.

Is there any rule that says you cant do a drop kick for field position ? Do you have to be attempting a drop goal (or drop out) to legally perform a drop kick during a game ?

1 of the dumbest decisions I have seen. Quiet clearly a knock on.

Our game gives to much benefit to the attacking team. No way was he going for drop goal.

Every player that looses the ball, will be attempting to kick it on the bounce, and claim to be going for field goal. The standard has now been set, by stupid merkins in the box.

So if a guy drops it and while it bounces off the ground (or raises as the term seems necessary) puts up a bomb in the air, is that still applicable?

To me intent should come into it because he has clearly missed the ball and the only way it has become successful is that the ball has convieniently connected him after the bounce?

Honest question. Has anyone seen a similar decision awarded like this? espescially anywhere else on the ground? Im still just miffed by it.

We had enough of a furore with the try in Origin when the Qld player dropped it onto his knee. Well atleast in that situation it hit his leg before it hit the ground!

Intention does have an effect in league but as I see it only as a way of grading an already illegal play. Ie an intentional forward pass is a penalty whereas an accidental forward pass is only a scrum. Same with high tackles - an intentional high tackle may see a player sent off where as an accidental one will usually only get a penalty.

Yeah. No way was it ever a field goal attempt, but it did touch his foot before it hit the ground, so legal try.

All i'm going to say from now on is that we have opened up a can of worms for the rest of the finals. Hopefully everyone who knocks on from now on knows to atleast stick a leg out after it's hit the turf!

Im not 100% sure on what the rules are with regards dropping and being in the motion of kicking.. obvisouly it passed a technicality or something..

but.. i would have thought.. it would have been ruled... as... a.. simple...

knock on lolz..

But how is what he physically did different to a dropkick? Id be interested in the wording of the rule that excludes a dropkick from being a knockon if anyone knows.
He wasn't attempting a drop kick. The referees have made it clear that they are trying to apply common sense. Benji Marshal made an error, not a try.
