where does the NBA get its money from? They have mostly sub 20k crowds.

Suprised NFL isn't higher, I'd like to know how they got confidential salary information?
Well for starters they signed an 8 year $7.4-billion which works out to be $930-million a year
then there is local television deals where the Lakers deal is worth $3-billion over 20 years, which works out to be $150-million a year.while teams like the Hornets,Kings and Blazers make $8M 11M & 12M respectively

Then there is ticket revenue where the 30 teams generated $1.1 billion in gate reciepts in 2010-11
the Lakers generate $1.9M a game while teams like the Grizzlies,TWolves and Bucks make much less $322,105, $350,118 & $415,450 respectively

And then there is sponsorship, old article but shows sponsorship in Basketball being close $600 million dollars a year with most of it generated by the NBA
http://www.sportspromedia.com/images/uploads/Basketball Sponsorship2.pdf
plunkett research claimed the NBA generated $4.1-Billion in revenue for 2010-11

Makes you want to own a hockey team.

41 Games with <90% of seats filled.
Absolutely, the habs and leafs generate more $ in ticket revenue per game than the Lakers ($1.9M)

Do American teams even need to draw crowds with the TV money that they are swimming in? Not that the ticket revenue would be anything to sneeze at.

Though I do wonder if American teams would be as rich if they had multiple teams in cities. The overwhelming number of American teams are the only show in town for that particular sport, though they do have to compete with the other sports.

Does anyone know if there is anything in the NRL players EA that stipulates how much the they earn depending on game revenue?

I didnt stay too close to the NBA lockout, but didnt they negotiate ~50% of the games revenue be used to determine the salary cap/player wages.

Based on a $1b TV contract over 5 years (havent followed these details too closely) that would equate to a $6.25m salary cap based on the TV deal alone. I know the economies of scale between the NBA and NRL would have an impact on what the game can afford to give its players, but what I'm trying to ask is are the NRL players getting a fair share of the pie? and if not will the ARLC work to sort this out, or is the RLPA a bunch of pushovers?

Take the list with a grain of salt.

The Knicks are well over the NBA salary cap (paying huge luxury tax charges), have 2 max contracts and this season payed out a $20million dollar amesty on Billups at the start of the year. Considering their owner also owns the New York Rangers NHL team, Madison Square Garden (which is going through a $1billion facelift) and MSG sports network they pay the most possible for an NBA team.

The Knicks might not be quite as high as the Lakers (I think they would be), but they are definitely higher than the 17 NBA teams on the list above them (FFS Milwaukee Bucks aren't even at the salary cap...)

Interesting that in 2011 that all 32 NFL teams fell within the top 50 most valuable sports teams in the world. The lowest rank was the Jacksonville Jaguars at 45th with a value of $725 million.

Easiestly the most valuable sport on the planet, and yet no teams appear on this list. Due to their rosters being larger of course. But it just goes to show that you dont need a massive international representation (in terms of people PLAYING the sport outside the US) or play 1000 games a year to put out a successful product.

Their TV deal is worth $3.8billion/year to the teams alone!

wow 41 home games? That is some committment needed by the fans! At least they don;t have to worry about the weather.

The regular season in baseball is something like 161 games

That's some crazy scheduling right there. Fancy telling the missus you're going to different games three nights running midweek.

Keep in mind with the NFL alot of the big money is paid in signing bonus' which wouldnt count as a salary.

Also players can be cut at any time so if your earning too much and not performing...gorne.

Just as an example of local TV deals.

http://articles.latimes.com/2011/feb/14/sports/la-sp-0215-lakers-time-warner-20110215

Time Warner Cable has struck a game-changing TV deal with the Lakers to create two new regional sports channels — one in English and one in Spanish — that will use the world champions as their backbone.
The 20-year agreement, which kicks off with the 2012-13 season, covers all preseason, regular-season and postseason games that are not nationally telecast.

The marriage of the Lakers and Time Warner Cable is a major blow to Fox Sports West and KCAL-TV, the current rights holders. It is also bad news for Lakers fans who don't subscribe to a pay-TV service, because no games will be available for free on over-the-air television once the Time Warner Cable deal takes effect. About 620,000 homes do not have a subscription to a pay-TV provider.
There had been rumblings that the Lakers were looking to start their own channel or find a new partner when Time Warner Cable came calling soon after the exclusive negotiating window Fox Sports had with the Lakers expired at the end of last year.
"The courtship happened quickly," said Tim Harris, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for the Lakers, who acknowledged the team did consider going solo on its own network.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Under its deal with Fox Sports West, the Lakers were getting about $30 million a year in rights fees, people familiar with the situation said. Some industry observers pegged the new 20-year pact at a value of $3 billion, although Time Warner Cable dismissed that figure.

Current NBA deal

The NBA’s current deal with ABC, ESPN, TNT and NBA TV, which includes digital rights, pays the league a total of $7.44 billion from the 2008-09 season through the 20015-16 season. The next deal will be for at least an average of $1.2 billion a season, or 30% more.

$7.5billion alone from US national TV coverage.

Imagine the NRL getting a $1.2billion TV deal with 10/Fox, and then the Broncos getting a $150million local deal from Nine Brisbane.

That's where a lot of the money is from.

out of curiosity, whats a season ticket worth in the MLB?

And for that matter the NBA, NHL too if anyone knows?

I know NFL ones are quite expensive, considering its only 8 regular season games a year, and most teams have long waiting lists. But what about the codes with longer seasons, does it work out reasonable cheap on a per game basis?

Barcelona alone get a 300 million euro a YEAR TV deal, as the clubs in La Liga negotiate their own tv deals.

I know the Leafs' waiting list for some sections is 20 years. This is for a team (my team God bless, used to live there and went to about 8 games) that hasn't won the Cup since '67.

They get handed down through the generations...

Every seat in most arenas is sold to season ticket holders.

Around $35-$250(for decent seats) at MSG for the Knicks/Rangers per game. Floor seats are in the thousands.

Because they are all sold out prior to a game being played you have to by them at an inflated cost from the season ticket holders.

No surprises there. If we had a population of 200 million plus we'd be right up amongst it. Quite frankly, rugby league will only ever be a tier two code with a tier one product. At best.
