Besides getting the spine right it concerns me looking at the above, like previous years, who is going to be the ball playing forward.
There’s certainly no IMO, no Trbojevic, Paulo or Yeo (using NSW SOO forwards as examples). Bash and barge, yes, just 1st graders, yes. But a ball playing forward who can play long minutes, well I can only see Tamou and that’s going to be 45/50 minutes only, who’s next?
The above takes into account the fact that there’s a few unknowns, the likes of, Blore & Utoikamanu, what is their true ability and their preferred game styles ? Can they make the starting 17?
As it stands my starting pack for Rd 1 would be, Tamou Liddle Musgrove Leilua McIntyre & Twal with reserve forwards of Aloiai, Blore & Mikaele.
What is certainly needed next year is a reserve grade competition.
I’m much less worried about the forwards than the spine atm and we shan’t be curing that anytime soon without transfer tricks or another freak loan.
Steff and Blore are excellent young players with outstanding junior achievements. The power, energy and mobility of their youth will suit the modern game. Big wraps on them from their past clubs.
Lucy was playing great footy at the back end of last season and was getting stronger too. That was a bit unexpected but really exciting. Another player on board, reaching up to optimum.
But they can bring the ball up, pressure and get the field position we want all day, they can hold the middle, but our backs need to fire up.
Plus I want a bit of the Dean Young in all the forwards. Every single one of them should be able to kick into the in goal and hit a sweet spot, they all need to draw and pass like Craig Gower, to take advantage of gaps. Inch perfect passes over 20 metres. That means massive skills training. Forget boot camp, I’d rather have them spend an entire week working on attack.
Run up a sandhill four times or carry a brick for 50 metres is not going to help a player double pump, cut out or run a tight angle. It’s not going to help him get into position on set plays.
Plus these guys are football players, they want to learn, accomplish new skills, perfect their craft.
You need defences on edge 24/7.
