Squad succession

The whole team seems tired, and unfit.

Last year was the fittest I had ever seen a Parra side, and it showed on the field.

I thought Devlin would be a huge loss and we replaced him with a pensioner who has been booted from his last two clubs.
We have certainly looked tired constantly handing the ball over to the opposition.

Well any imbecile with a brain would realise its gonna take a few years to get over last years debacle ... unfortunately i dont know if it can be done by 2018

If we had spent 1.2m for hunt im sure many would be whinging about it deluxe

IMO we have the base of a good team, but we need 1 or 2 more pieces

Plus if we want to compete this year we need our guns to fire ... norman has been a bit sketchy the last couple of games and Semi doesnt really seem interested atm ... matagi started like a steamtrain but seems tired now

Basically this. We were always going to rely a lot on form this year, and our defence which has been a bit off the last few weeks.

But we have a pretty good full strength pack that's nicely balanced and easily a finals level pack. Plenty of metres in it to give Norman a platform to use guys like French and Jennings. Beau Scott is probably starting to be a worry, we may need to look at replacing him with a running lock just to shore up the pack a bit more, but really a tweak or two is all it needs. Edwards is a much bigger miss for us than people think IMO and will make a big difference when he returns.

Norman is rep level, he wouldn't be your first choice especially given the depth in QLD halves but he's certainly good enough. Hell he's better than most of the NSW options. He needs a partner. I love Guth but he's not what we need at six, he's a centre or a fullback ideally. We also need a hooker, it's so important these days to have a quality player in the 9.

Our backline is fine, honestly. People are banging on about Taka but he was pretty excellent for us before this season, brilliant at setting up his winger. Whether he's down on form or fitness or his injuries are jjust starting to catch up with him, who knows. But we don't need to sign a replacement. We already have a top level centre in Jennings, all we need on the other side realistically is someone who can hold their own in defence and run a line, maybe pass. Surely between the likes of Auva'a and the other Jennings, or younger guys like Aukafolau, we can find that within the club if Taka doesn't pull his finger out.

Obviously we have to replace Semi next year unless he does a monumental back flip, but Feldt or Nofoaluma are supposedly being spoken to and would be worthy replacements.

Really, we add a reasonable half and a good hooker to this side, shift Guth to the centres, and it's a totally different side. We aren't far off really.

He's coming on to replace Guerra, who's playing in the middle and neither Cordner or Auberson are moving to the middle when he comes on. Maybe you should watch the other matches.
Any edge forward can play in the middle. It's just that most of them are wasted there.

Well I'd say Matterson, in consultation with the coaching staff, has decided he's no longer a half or predominantly come on and play as an edge forward and will be playing in the middle, but he's also someone who could fill in the edge's and centre as required.

But for the primary job that Robinson wants him to do (playing in the middle), Takairangi wouldn't get picked ahead of him, which was the original point of the argument.

Not sure Matterson is the best example, though, because he doesn't play as a genuine middle forward (in the sense that, say, Beau Scott does). He kind of floats between a ball playing lock/third half role and popping up here and there on the edges anyway.

He's like Sef Paulo, I suppose. But not shithouse.

Well I'm sure nobody would pick Matterson over Takairangi at centre. I doubt they would pick him at any edge position over Takairangi.

Arguable about edge forward - Matterson has spent time at edge forward in that team, at least last year. Hopefully Takairangi doesn't have to play centre in the future Eels team.

Agree on Matagi and Semi. Issues are getting those pieces before we end up losing guys and needing more pieces and before cheaper options like Bevan cost a lot more.
Why developing a young winger who may only cost 120k should be something a club does every few years. I doubt hoffman offers anymore then young jennings would

Yeah, the Roosters would offload Cordner or Auberson and sign Takairangi. Good one Pou.

The Roosters already many years ago chose Auberson over Takairangi...they obviously had no need for him, given they would probably be earning the same at the time.

Hoffman has been pretty average.

Which is probably an adequate performance level relative to his salary, to be fair. Also, in his defence - our best set pieces are clearly geared to our left-edge.

He has done his basic duties as a winger pretty well. He has looked clean under the high ball and worked hard rucking it out, even if he isn't as impactful as the bigger NRL wingers going around in that regard. The overall fragility of the right-edge shouldn't be pinned on him either.

Where going to struggle once Semi goes if he's the best option we have of the back three of bringing the ball back though.

Yep no arguments from me there mate. That is why I don't mind the mutterings about Kyle Feldt. He isn't prime-Semi but he is a physical presence in the ruck.
