Scotland Squad
Evil Homer said:
Scotland have included six Super League players in their 20-man squad for the European Nations Cup clashes with Wales and Ireland next month.

Danny Brough (Hull), Wayne McDonald and Iain Morrison (both Huddersfield), Duncan Macgillivray (Wakefield) and Mike Wainwright (Warrington) are joined by uncapped Bradford hooker Ian Henderson.

There are also eight players from the National League, including Henderson's brother Andrew and Hull KR winger Jon Steel, who won five Scotland rugby union caps before switching codes earlier this year.

Coach Steve McCormack has called up seven uncapped players in all and has included the requisite six amateur players, four of whom must be in the matchday 17 to comply with tournament regulations.

The squad will gather on Monday, October 10, to prepare to play Wales in Bridgend on Sunday, October 16, and Ireland in Glasgow a week later.

The Scotland squad (with clubs and caps in brackets) is:

Danny Brough (Hull, 2), Andy Brown (Fife Lions, 2), Steve Deviney (Easterhouse Panthers, 0), Richard Fletcher (Castleford, 1), Dougie Flockhart (Scotland Students, 0), Andrew Henderson (Castleford, 4), Ian Henderson (Bradford, 0), Wade Liddell (Gateshead, 0), Duncan MacGillivray (Wakefield, 1), David McConnell (Rochdale, 4), Wayne McDonald (Huddersfield,8 ), Andy McPhail (Clyde Bulls, 2), Iain Morrison (Huddersfield, 2), Gareth Morton (Hull KR, 1), Mick Nanyn (Whitehaven, 0), David Simm (Edinburgh Eagles, 0), Jon Steel (Hull KR, 0), Nick Surtees (St Albans Centurions, 0), Mike Wainwright (Warrington, 4), Oliver Wilkes (Leigh, 2)

That's a pretty strong squad.

Its dissapointing England dropped out because they set the standard for the other countries to reach, in which they were getting closer now i fear the standard may drop off. But i suppose it gave Gorgia an opportunity

Craig Innes? Surely not the Craig Innes?
France have the best halves in the NH in Rinaldi and Greseque and with FT training their forwards will be able to match it with the ENglish before long.

They should win this tournament with that lineup, although Wales and Ireland will be strong, as I suppose, will Scotland, but I'd still tip France.

England don't particpate because they are well ahead of the mark.

The 6 nations are fledgling and/or semi-pro for most of their make-up.

They are well suited to each other in terms of playing ability and resources available to the national body.

The more often these 6 play each other, they higher they will rise in their levels or playing competitiveness.

Good to see the Scottish side with some genuinely talented, professional players in their lineup. Danny Brough's not a bad little player, and guys like Hendersen and Wainwright will add quite a bit to the squad as well.

It looks like these nations are starting to get serious with the naming of Super League players in their teams for the 2008 WC. Good to see they must have 4 home growen players in the team too.

This Competition is one of the best things to happen to International Rugby League in a long long time. Lets just hope the crowds improve like last season.

Lee Briers announced as Wales captain
Written by: Ian Golden WRL Media
6/10/2005 Views: 56

Lee Briers will captain Wales for the first time on Sunday 16 October when Scotland are visitors to the Brewery Field, Bridgend in the opening match of the 2005 Rugby League European Nations Cup.

The Warrington Wolves captain makes a welcome comeback to Wales as he has missed the last two European Nations Cup tournaments due to injury. He won the last of his ten Welsh caps against New Zealand at the Millennium Stadium in 2002.

The 27-year-old stand-off has become a vital part of the Wolves side since joining from St Helens in 1997 and was inspirational in leading them to the Super League play-offs this year. Wales coach, Martin Hall hopes he can transfer this enthusiasm and leadership to the Dragons this autumn.

“Lee was the obvious choice as skipper,” said Hall. “He has done really well at Warrington this year and has always excelled at international level. I know he can do the job for us this autumn and bring the European Nations Cup back to Wales.”

Briers made his international debut in 1998 for Wales against England at Widnes. He was the outstanding player in Wales’ 2000 World Cup campaign that included a memorable display against Australia in the semi-final where he scored a try and two drop-goals to give Wales a 20-14 half-time lead before the Kangaroos stamped their authority on the game in the second-half. Briers made his full Great Britain debut against France in Agen in 2001.

The full Wales squad will be announced early next week.

I'd love to know how many of the players named in these sides were actually born in the country they are going to play for.

I think it is a minimum of 4 per squad but France, Russia and Georgia all use only home grown players. Looking at the Irish squad it seems they have 8 but I'm not sure if Wales and Scotland will go over the minimum 4 until we see their full squads.

Who was the Nobel Prize winner that suggested a minimum of just four players per squad?

I can't remember, I think I read it before last years tournament. It would be best if they increased this number by 4 each year so that after 6 years the entire squad would have to come from that country.

The team for France's first European Nations Cup game against Russia on October 15th has been announced. They seem to be resting a few key players and taking the Russians lightly. This is by no means the strongest French team available,we will probably see that later in the ENC and against Australia and NZ.

It doesn't happen in Union, cricket or even football. So why should Rugby League be any different. As said, even the Scotish, Irish and Welsh football sides are littered with players who qualify on ancestry. That's always going to happen when mother England is full of imigrants from those nations.

Anyway, for the record Carl De Chenu is also a genuine Irishman. Wales will have a few also.

nospam49, give it some time. Take your mind back to 2000, this is an improvement. Cliche time, "Rome wasn't built in a day", "From little acorns...",
"3 steps forward, 2 steps back". That's Rugby League.

Waiting with baited breath to read the LF responce to that.
