Im a massive, massive Chili Peppers fan from their late 80's - mid 90's days and despite the massive change to pop music in Californication and By The Way still managed to enjoy those albums to a degree.

I got this just on a week ago now, and being a 2 CD, its taken me a bit of time to listen to it all. After 1 listening I was a little dissapointed, but then I am with most new albums because I never appreciate a song on its first airing.

Anyway, Ive put the old CD on repeat and am really starting to dig it. With Dani California I was hoping they were slowly drifting back to their funk style roots (obviously releasing a pop/funk song for the charts) but was a little let down that they didnt.

Having said that after more and more listens Im really into it. The song 'snow (hey oh) - is super catchey.

What do you guys think of the album?

It's the RHCP masterpiece, imo. Borrows elements from every album they've made but adds dexterity, polish and acres of panache. It's Frusciante's show - his guitar flourishes arouse me on an almost orgasmic level. Flea gets to slap and pick, Chad is as thunderous as ever, and Anthony's voice has matured, but without doubt John is the man. Fanboys like myself will get it and love it, for others this is the definitive Chili Peppers album. Very fkn good. 10 stars.

Peppers are going downhill, By The Way wasnt a good album. They were better when Flea was the man, not Fruciante

Blood Sugar Sex Magik is my favourite album so far. I've been waiting for Stadium Arcadium for ages, I'm happy with it, I quite like it.

Sounds the same as their last 3-4 albums IMO.

I knew someone would say that after listening to the first few tracks. But have you actually listened to the whole album?

I wouldnt go anywhere near calling it their 'masterpiece' but I do agree about bringing certain aspects of a lot of their albums together. I think the song "Storm in a Teacup" on disc 2 will quickly become one of my favourite Chili's songs. Really has that funk/rock vibe to it that only they can really pull off.

I'm never going to forgive the Chili Peppers for getting Mr Bungle kicked off the BDO a few years back. Damn junkies...

I was a big Faith No More fan, but most of Mike Patton's side bands didnt do much for me so I must have missed this.

What actually happened here?

I havent seen an announcement yet, but the smart money would indicate BDO 07 is a very real chance.

Such a weak album. They are hovering right smack-bang in the middle, being safe and not doing anything remotely new.

I liked One Hot Minute and some stuff of BSSM, but they just annoy me now.

I really am surprised that you guys are saying you like One Hot Minute yet dont like this album.

I thought One Hot Minute was the start of their decline towards pop based music.

You've hit the nail on the head. Flea is the key to the Chili Peppers.

One Hot Minute was at least bass driven.

Apparently, Keidis was originally pissed off at Patton for 'stealing his style' in regards to the 'Epic' film clip - even though RHCP wern't even that popular at this point (89'). Fast forward ten years, and Patton's other band Mr Bungle tried to get their new album titled 'Califonication' ironically at the same title the Chili Peppers annouce their new album will be called 'Californication' (Bungle settle with 'California') - Keidis gets pissed off, claims that the Chili Peppers won't play a series of European and Australian (The 2000 BDO) festivals if Bungle are ont he same bill as them, which they were originally before the Chili Peppers were named on the bill - Festival promoters get scared that Keidis will chuck a hissy fit if Bungle are on and kick Bungle off the tours. Bungle play a special Halloween show in the US that year dressed as the Chili Peppers complete with bad songs and frequent mock-heroin injections
