The songwriting was really really weak on 'By The Way' - they sounded like they lost their edge and purpose. Live the material was shocking when played next to anything pre-OHM stuff. Also I guess I've probably outgrown their mostly predictable material. I wasn't much of a fan of Californication previous to it either.
Hope that helps your analysis.
Also, if you "never think anything they make is awful", then you have no right to question anyones objectivity towards the band.
I still like By the Way and music from a personal experience is not objective, it is subjective and people shouldn't be aiming to shove their views down other throats. That's why I hate some music and movie reviewers. My opinion is the only thing that matters when it comes to my enjoyment of entertainment. I say 'Who the hell are you to tell me what's what, I'll make up my own mind thanks very much! don't try to steer me away from even seeing a movie if I really want to see it!
By the Way just doesn't fit alot of people's definition of what the Peppers style is supposed to be apparently. It departs too much from the earlier stuff for some, but I enjoyed it for what it was.
What songs on By the Way were so bad?
Not everyone was a fan of the Peppers back in their younger days, I became a fan after buying Californication and naturally looked forward to By the Way and also thought it was quite good, although not as good across the board. I had not really heard the earlier albums so I had nothing to compare By the Way to. Since I got Blood Sugar Sex Magik and One Hot Minute, particuarly BSSM, I am not as a big a fan of By the Way, but still have tracks like 'This is the Place', 'Throw Away Your Television' and
Bought Stadium Arcadium today and I'm giving it a first listen. Some of the songs show an enjoyable return to a funkier style but it doesn't have the youthful rocking edge of their late 80's/early 90's music, maybe coz the guys are like 43 years old now!
