I've just started watching Strange New Worlds, and I'm enjoying it, although it does kind of confirm to me that ST rip off/homage The Orville is the best modern ST. I've always been an OG fan over any of the others, and SNW and The Orville seem closest.

I love SNW really looking forward to the new season.
I’m watching Academy (STA?) and after a slow start the show is improving. IMO.

Though some of the stuff still annoys me a bit. The skirt wearing Klingon for instance seems a long way from ST canon on Klingons. But I suppose the point is that there are all types of characters in all races? species? So be it.

ST Academy is set in the 32nd Century. If you didn't watch Discovery, you may be unaware of all the changes that happened in the galaxy since the days of the 24th Century of ST:NG years. The incident known as "the burn" soo just about all dilithium crystals explode, seeing something like 90%-95% of all starships vaporised. As such interstellar commerce and communications all but collapsed, the Federation went from having 500+ member plants to less than 10, with planets like Earth and Vulcan leaving the Federation all together. Even the Klingon Empire went under.

As such there have been changes in social structures in those times. Heck don't forget, the Academy's second in command is half Klingon/Jem'hadar.

I’ve watched Discovery 3 or 4 times…
The last time I quite enjoyed it.

So, a few years behind, but I finished the first season of SNW, good show but there were a few dips in quality throughout the season.

The episode where the ship gets taken over by the pirates, where was the crew outside of the main ones? That just took me out of it. All they needed was a scene of some extras as pirates marching some extras as crew and it's solved.

Spoiler:
Also Hemmer was a great character, why write him out?

Also, I find Number 1 (can't remember her actual name) to be a terrible character, she's very bland.

Anyway, on to S2 tonight. :)

ST: Academy is awful

I miss the days when Trek was story 1st and message 2nd but Alex Kurtzman seems to think he needs to be as loud as possible with the "woke" messaging at the expense of telling a solid, compelling story and character development.

Its sad when the best Trek show since Voyager isnt even a Trek show. The Orville shits on everything since

No1’s name is Una. Una Chinn-Riley.
Some fans surmise that Una’s character is the start of the Star Trek habit of calling First Officers “Number 1”.

She gets some chances in later episodes to show a bit more of her characters back story & character.

While not Trek Babylon 5 has been added to Amazon Prime.

Except the pilot which I paid $3 to buy on Apple TV.

The CGI is rough and would have looked terrible compared to miniatures even in the mid 90s.

I'm enjoying it but the higher resolution conpard to the original broadcast really shows the budget. I'm pretty sure a prop was a Tiger Electronics hand held game.

Episode 2 of season 2 of SNW focuses on Chin-Riley's history and why she joined Star Fleet despite her heritage. It really gives Rebecca Romijn some material to work with.
Yeah, I'm past that episode now, and still find the character to be average.

Season 2 has been great though, improvement on S1 I'd say, aside from the variable long episode times which shits me with streaming era tv. I miss the good old days of 45m and out.

When prestige shows started having 60 to 90 minute episodes I thought it was awesome.

Then every show started having 60 minute episodes.

I get they want to be Game of Thrones but they're f**king not!

GoT was the worst of the lot, I've always claimed the final season was way worse just due to episode length, with less episodes it felt more rushed. They could have easily done 12 normal length episodes, with 6 devoted to the north and then the remainder to blondie going crazy. And I think people would have been less annoyed as there would be two actual normal arcs.

I'm not a huge fan of animation so I nearly clocked out of it about 10 minutes in when it looked like it was just going to be a Lower Decks episode. But luckily just as I was thinking of turning it off it switched to live action.

Its more "Dawsons Creek in space" than it is Star Trek
