So do I mate. He took the bait when the opposition started carrying on with even further crap. the bloke definately deserves to be in the next game, as has been a real contriubter to us being in the position that we now find ourselves in.

Hopefully we can get home against Italy, and he can have another go at whoever is next.

He has been very good for us mate. !!!

Whatever Hiddink puts on the park is the strongest team.

Although that does not include Kalac.

what has strejovski done?

f**k him off and let alo start. we need to be attacking from the start, not rely on the last f**king 15 minutes

that mentality will eliminate us from the start, its do or die with no room for error, and i said it before and say it again, if we play attacking from kick off and leak a goal its over, finished, italians defend 1-0 leads better than anyone, you got to play it balance and not go gung ho

Our class players such as Cahill, Kewell, Bresciano can attack and defend. We need all our best players on the field at once and from the start of the game. Culina has played a defensive role all tournament, he`s extremely fit and defends ok, why not play him at right back ???
Bresciano is quite simply a much better attacking option on the right, to what Sterjovski is. Aloisi is a class player capable of giving the Italians plenty of trouble, he should be starting. It`s not Guus who`s got us to where we are, we have some very classy players at the moment and we could have had Charlie Yankos as our manager and still been where we are now.

Besides that, if we play our very best 11, we`ll hold the ball for longer periods and therefore not be in danger of a goal being scored against us as often.

This game will be won by our defence. The longer we keep them scoreless the more it will frustrate them and our chances will come. We will need to be as tight in defence as we were against Brazil and we will hit them on the break. Whatever you think of Wilkshire he has the legs to close down the Italian midfielders which is what we will need. Emmerton has been brilliant in this role. Stejovski is a better option than Bresciano because he is quicker and plays more of a wingers role which is what we need. When Bresciano got run down in the clear against Brazil that was enough for me to see he not our best option at right winger.

I can't understand why anyone wants Cullina to play right back. He plays his career as an attatcking midfielder and is more likely than anyone to score from distance. His game is stifled enough as an defensive midfielder. You absolutely waste Cullina at right back.

You want to select Wilkshire ???
The bloke can`t hold the ball. Class players that can hold the ball in our position for long periods is the only way we`ll win the game. Culina may not be a natural right back, but he has that touch of class about him that we require. He has the cool head required to make the right decisions on where to pass the ball from the back. Why anyone including Guus would select Sterjovski in front of Bresciano is uncomprehendable ???

i bef to differ, guus is one of the reasons we are where we are, why? hes a tactical master, we left the bland, boring english way of playing and catapolted us into the world cup, why is it one year ago the same team got mauled at the confederatioms cup under frank farina? the defence was a shambles, tripping over one another, not reading the game at all, step in guus hiddink who tacticaly corrected our defence and look where we've gone? i never argued the point about sterjovski or culina, i argued the point simply going gung ho attacking from the first second is stupid, naieve and pointless because it will leave too many gaps in defence and the italians have the counter attack mastered and will punish us, we need to play balanced but the key is not giving cheap possesion away like we always do, i guarentee if that game against holland was in a world cup we'd of been punished for the cheap possesion we gave away and we almost were against croatia, thats out major defect

I'm not a big fan of Sterjovski but i think he played ok against Croatia and is obviously a better option than Wilkshere. So that's the team I would go with and in the second half bring on Aloisi to partner Viduka.

So you know better than Guus do you? Get real sunshine, that statement is proof in itself why your sitting on the couch. If you are playing one upfront you want your left & right wingers to have the pace and ability to fly down the edges and whip in crosses. Stejovski was supreme in that position against Craotia. Bresciano who is very creative and has great touch is as just too slow. He got run when 5-10m in the clear against Brazil. The guy does not suit right mid when we have a lone striker.

Wilkshire is the best player available for us to close down the space in the midfield. He is close to the fittest player in the team and tackles very hard. Krypnotik is exactly right, Italy is far to good an atatcking team to be throwing strikers in from the start. We will need to play like we did against Brazil and close down the space in the midfield or Totti will have a field day.
It won't be Skoko, because he doesn't have the legs. We won't be playing 2 strikers you can put your house on that. Bowen_1 team is a chance if Guus decides to go that way. But IMO Guus will go for defensive prowess and physical stamina to be able to run all day and close down the midfield like Emmerton does. Wilkshire is the best qualified to fill that role.

This game is going to be a real problem. Italy are one of the worst opponents we could have possibly drawn. They are strong at the back and through the central midfield. IMO, the way to beat them is for two wide Midfielders to create havoc down the flanks and get in behind the defence and drawing the central defenders out. I am pretty sure Guus knows and would agree. The problem is that the Australian midfielders have had no width at all so far. They have relied on their passing game to come through the centre of defences and with the central midfielders being our strenght, this has worked, With the fulbacks providing the Width. But italy will be the toughest test defensively yet (including Holland and Brazil).

I think that we need a wide midfield. Kewell to play wide on the left is obvious. The right midfielder is not so obvious, but to me Culina seems to be the best suited. The problem with this line of thinking though, is that Kewell would need to risk changing the through the middle style he is playing which is a big risk, considering how succesful it has been so far. This a decision onlly Guus can make, but i would definitely play the traditional wide mifielders in this game.

one thing that will piss you all off (hehe except locky ofcourse) if guus' comments are anything to go by, kalac will probably start again, giving you the all triple by-passes i suffered the other morning

Bresciano got run down because he had the ball at his feet! Impossible to run at full speed and control a football. He's hardly slow and his crossing is superb - refer to Kewells goal for evidence.

Guus had made it very clear that Kalac will NOT play.

Bullsh*t. If he can't sprint and dribble at the same time he shouldn't be there. IMO if we play one up front there is no place for Brescianno at right mid. If we play two upfront, which we don't, then different story. His best position is in the hole behind Viduka but we have a glut of players who can play there.

so many different opinions in here which is great material for a great discussion

i thought wilkshire was horrible vs japan but hey he seems the only guy we've got for the role. i'll be happy if he's selected. after all, he's an aussie and he deserves to have my full support. he'll no doubt be much better for the experience too

sterjovski should be there. bresciano will most likely come off the bench. although kewell's injury could dictate things

updated lineup for me

Schwarzer
Moore Neill Chipperfield
Wilkshire Grella
Sterjovski Culina Cahill Bresciano
Viduka

Kewell, if needed and 80% fit, after 80-85 minutes. hope he can last up to 35-40 minutes

I would like Kewell out wide against the Italians (although this injury is now a worry).

I know it is a while ago, but back in his Leeds days, some of his best games were in the Uefa and Champions against italian sides running with the ball from deep.

I like Cullina, i think he does a good job, but we may need to score from distance in this game (or maybe a rebound shot from a long range effort), and Cullina doesn't seem to have the power from 25 out. I think we need Bresc from the start for this reason, and because unlike other games it will be easier to attack early and defend more later.

If we are focred to defend alot early, we will risk yellow cards. once on yellow cards defenders have to be careful and we can't afford to give Italy any room.
