State of Origin is dead: just end it now

Origin was so popular through the late 80's and 90's due to it being so close and no side winning more than 3 series in a row. It dropped off a bit in popularity when NSW dominated during the early 2000's (couldn't fill stadiums) even though they also never got more than 3 in a row they were still very dominant.

Even Mal at that point said "Origin is dead" if I remember correctly

Origin is far from dead, but in a 2 horse race you need it to remain close for interest to be sustained long term as one side if continuing to lose can see ppl switch off

Australia hasn't beaten NZ in a meaningful game of Union in over a decade and a half, and they still charge $200+ for a ticket.

Do you really think the Wallabies are as popular now as they were those years ago? Pretty sure ratings have suffered badly

I think it depends who is doing the dominating in some ways - if the Wallabies had beaten NZ for 10 years straight, I reckon it's popularity would still be strong in both countries because such dominance upsets the seemingly natural order of things.

It's the same with Origin - NSW is more well resourced in terms of teams etc and people think we ought to be strong, so going through a period like this isn't necessarily bad for the concept.

When the reverse occurs and the side with all the advantages (real or imagined) just dominates, people get bored.

NSW was S*#%!!!

The S*#% List:
- Pearce
- Ennis
- Jackson
- Hopoate
- Merrin
- Cordner
- Daley and the selectors for picking a S*#% team!!!

All this bullcrap about looking to the future with players like Jackson F*%& OFF!!!

Fifita, Lewis, and Watmough would of made a difference the guys who were there to break the drought. Time for Gallen to retire! That is the last time NSW ever pick Pearce? Can't even kick for S*#%!!!!

I wish QLD won last year too so deserving for 10yrs straight and NSW 10yrs S*#% of the decade!!

Tired of listening to our own NSW fans excuses!!! Open your eyes!

I fail to see how ratings or crowd attendances indicates that origin is at its best.

House rules is killing it with the ratings as a tv show, doesn't mean it isn't overhyped, over exposed horseshit though.

Im not questioning the conclusion, just the argument.

Who said it was "at it's best??"

Its geniused to think they are going to reduce it's scope or cut it back because of success of those figures.

What sensible administrator would do that? If anything there would be a strong argument to reduce the scope of the NRL and increase that of Origin.

some people on here may only imply it, commentators of the game actually believe it. Every year the 'decider' or potential game where NSW actually win a series is touted as 'the biggest origin of all time'. Then people get on these forums and say its in decline to which statistic gurus reply; but but but, viewership and crowd attendances at an all time high.

Yes you are right, they will never cut back origin as its the money maker.

as for increasing the 'scope' of origin, it would be a great way to ensure the novelty wears thin and the NRL comp is killed off, that's for sure.

Rather than end it we should have a referendum to move it to the end where collateral damage has an off season to recover from
