Very sad news, hope he somehow recovers

exactly mate,

Both polynesian also, with out a doubt more money to be invested into this area of the game.
Also more maori & polynesian expertise and focus and acknowledgment in general.

The same focus as they 'bush' - where everybody is screaming about the Bush and the support they need etc. Or comments about Anzac days being Australias day .....

This isnt just an australian sport anymore - at least it is a trans-tasman competition and need to be given the strategy and support to cater to these needs.

Lucky they have NZRL ex-boss Jim Doyle he should understand this a bit more.

great point MMM - NRL needs to recruit ex players and professionals with revelant cultural experience to guide these young fellas. Polynesian and Aboriginal players are a massive part of the game and the NRL needs to spend the money to support them and their clubs to reduce further tragedies.

A North Queensland Cowboys squad member is fighting for his life after a mystery incident.
The rugby league club has released a statement saying Alex Elisala is in Mackay District Hospital in a critical condition though management did not said why.
Cowboys CEO Peter Jourdain pleaded for privacy for the family while the club used its Twitter account to debunk rumours of a balcony fall.
"We ask that everyone gives their thoughts and prayers to Alex at this difficult time," Mr Jourdain said.

"We will keep everyone updated on the situation and ask that you respect the privacy of Alex's family and friends."
Within minutes of posting the statement on the North Queensland Cowboys website, the club's Twitter account was used to dispute a story.

Reading on another forum I frequesnt that in a very typical DT angle they have run the statement from the Cowboys requesting privacy but linked Lifeline & Beyond Blue basically subverting the intent of the Cowboys request.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe anytime an incident of this nature occurs that the Media outlet is obligated to provide contact details for organisations like Lifeline.
You'll also find them at the bottom of every article about depression in general.

Slightly off topic and cultural differences aside but Luke Burt recently retired from the Eels NRL team and this is now his roll at the eels.

Some of these guys leave home at 15 or 16 and have way too much time and money on their hands and they need guidance from some one who has been through the same things that they are going through.

Terrible news. I watched a little bit of Alex in NYC and he was very capable. He played in the 2011 NYC final and was I thought very good around the ruck.

Sad loss, rest in peace Alex.

Very, very sad. It just makes me wonder what could possibly have happened to this young man with such a bright future ahead, when everything seemed to be so fine. Particularly as just two days ago I read the article about Mosese Fotuaika, and he had just played in a QCup game. Condolences go out to his family, friends and the Cowboys.

Sad news,

For those who mentioned the NRL doing something, do they still employ Nigel Vagana ?

I believe part of Nigel's role was to assist the islander boys settle in, but you can't be there 24/7.

RIP Alex, condolences to your family and friends.
