Steelers Army?

I was at Brookvale yesterday (in the Ken Arthurson Stand - LOL) and happened to notice across on the hill that at one end of the hill was the Dragons army and at the other end was a much smaller group of Dragons fans wearing Steelers/Heritage jerseys and with Steelers banners (I think the most predominant one read "Steelers Curtain" or some such thing).

I don't get to as many games as I would like and no doubt this is not a new development, but what do people think about this? I felt it was a bit divisive, but I guess at least it means that there are a few supporters willing to travel from Wollongong to Brookvale, so maybe it isn't all bad.

My guess is that they were hanging out with Manly supporters.

Some weeks ago there was a funny thread about this on the Jubilee Avenue 9msn forum.
The fellow who owns the Steel Curtain banner was trying convince others that its not about the Illawarra Steelers, and that it was actually the Pittsburgh Steelers and their slogan.... yeah, at a Rugby League match. lol

When that didn't sound too convincing, he added another theory that it was also about Stalin's Steel Curtain in Commie Russia.
I pointed out that he was getting mixed up with the Iron Curtain.

They're a weird mob. lol

The reason for this, Ricky, is that St George and Illawarra fans tend to argue and fight with each other.
When St George are winning, The Red and White makes pink Army are very happy. When they are LOSING, they tend to yell out 'Steelers Steelers' indicating unhappiness with their team and their belief that the Steelers are the weaker link in the chain. Steelers fans don't like this so they usually retaliate with fists.
Opposition fans find this behaviour VERY FUNNY. No better evidence than the 20000 witnesses at Toyota Park a few years ago, when the Sharks SMASHED the Queens in the 2nd half. Fists flew, cursing at each other was frequent and many Queens fans found them outside the ground with 20 minutes to go.
While I hate to see crowd violence at games, it was somewhat gratifying to see SUPPORTERS OF THEIR OWN CLUB go at it between themselves. For that reason.
I hope I have been able to clear up your question Ricky. Enjoy the football.....

Speaking as someone who was two metres from the actual incident that night I can indeed confirm that this brawl is a myth. As is the notion that the incident involved St George and Illawarra fans.

Seeing the whole thing it was an argument and handbags from two blokes. I was later to learn that they where in fact brothers. The Police came in heavy handed and made a few arrests. The result of this was Sutherland police being taken to court and having to pay the two gentlemen a few grand in damages.

The Shire Constabulary got owned, just as you have now.

You may now return to your village in shame.

I spoke to a couple of the steeler army guys on the train home from parramatta. Seemed like ok guys tome, just a bit cut up about having to live next to the shire as are we on the other side.

It'll be interesting to see if the Steel Curtain measures up in the Gong next week.
