Steelers celebrate proud 40-year history

A hearty congratulations to the Steelers on their 40th , the team was certainly worthy of their place in the NRL . As the article has stated the Illawarra region gave the game many a talented player that went on to stellar careers with their respective clubs .

The amalgamation with Saints in 1999 gave the Dragons one of the best rosters in the competition with the likes of Brad Mackay , Rod Wishart and of course Paul McGregor who always produced a tradesman-like performance in the centers .

Well done gents !
Brad Mackay a proud Brighton Sea Gulls & St George Jnr.

One of my all time favourites.

Maybe read the article?

Or you could just continue to make half baked points and then act like a smarmy merkin.

Totally up to you.
I did read the article.

The simple fact is I have been hearing Illawarra this, Illawarra that for over 60 years in relation to what they have done.

They came and went as an NRL entity all within a 17 year period and considering all the hype about the Illawarra and how they should have been admitted earlier bla bla bla they had their chance to shine and prove their standing in the big time and they didn't.

I for 1 wish they had of achieved and stood on their own and am pissed that they didn't.

Stop pretending that this is coming from a good place. You were trying to find a way to heap shit on the Steelers. It’s cowardly that you pretend otherwise.

coming from someone that followed Illawarra through their 17 years, yeah i am proud of the club. also proud of the Illawarra district for producing so much talent in the history of rugby league.

have been watching some old games on dvd and can say i would prefer to follow a team, though never the best always tried their best..and had pride in that jumper. just like the steelers did. unlike the dragons for the last 10 years.

if st. george illawarra just played in some type of jumper that looked like the old steelers jumper in the gong. play in the red v for every other match.

if this basic thing was done you would find the gong would maybe see a bit of the old team.

for the fans that supported the steelers and attended home games im sure you also can't believe how much character has been lost at win stadium.

You seem have a few issues coming to grips with reality.

I am amazed that you think I wouldn't have wanted the Steelers to survive and that my wish for that to have happened is some cowardly act

If they had survived I wouldn't have to endure the JV for starters, nor the horrendous concoction of away jerseys honouring a failed entity, avoided having either Farrar & Mc Gregor showcasing their complete lack of skills whilst players wore the big red v and last not least wouldn’t have to put up with you and muzby as you would be off fantasising about the greatness of the Steelers.

So you have missed the bleeding obvious but I’m not that surprised as you have form in such matters.

Who could have ever foreseen just how the joint venture would have brought two sets of opposing fans together as one, uniting towards a common goal.

The capacity of human beings to come together for the greater good never ceases to amaze me

I see your point be55 , but spare a thought about these big eared fellows , they have been talking to us for years and we merely shove some bread in their mouth and say - “ yeah , yeah whatever “ . :flushed:

Going back through history i know the Steelers were never the most wealthy of clubs , in fact probably about the poorest. Question for former fans, was there evidence then that the lack of money was due to lack of suitable income producing leagues club or just plain incompetence from there board ? i thought there was a plan to amalgamate some of the local leagues clubs to form one large conglomerate but it obviously didn't get traction.

A little from column a & a little from column b..

Outside of BHP & WIN no other real major corporations in the area.. IMB not really an option for major funds..

Having a jerk of a club GM who fraudulently siphoned off nearly $1m in funds didn’t help either..

I've always enjoyed the road trips to the 'Gong. Standing on the hill hearing the waves behind you feeling the mist from the ocean on a hot Sunday arvo while watching the footy and getting drunk is a really special experience for a rugby league fan.
Cheers to the Steelers!
