Steelers celebrate proud 40-year history

Well I for one used to enjoy watching the Steelers in their heyday. They had an excellent side in the early 90's who could play hard yet entertaining footy. John Simon, Ian Russell, Johnny Cross, Wishart, McIndoe and McGregor of course. Good footballers all.
This is what a lot of saints fans forget. Those players that you’re talking about were my childhood heroes Add Brett Rodwell and Dean Schiffiliti and you’re talking about the players that looked after us at school coaching clinics and signed our jerseys.

We didn’t have a huge amount of success. But we were always underdogs, and if we went down we went down swinging. We especially punched above our weight when we were playing against the star studded broncos sides of the early 90’s.

Later I’d run into them at the pub or at their businesses, and they’d always be incredibly gracious with their time and happy to have a beer and/or a chat.

I imagine that it’s similar to the experience of old Saints fans living around kogarah. Attachment to a footy club as a fan is about much more than premierships (although a Steelers premiership would have been very f**king nice).

I think that’s more than enough reason to celebrate the Steelers.

Any time I was in the gong I’d always go for a meal at mudcat when it was there..

Having your breakfast served to you by one of your childhood heroes was always a special occasion..

I lived in a party house that was a stones throw from mudcat for several years.

Some of the states that he saw me in when I dragged my sorry arse down there for a coffee on a Sunday morning were pretty embarrassing. But he was always very sympathetic.

I think my favourite memory from mudcat was rocking up there at 8.30am to get B&E rolls + coffee for a group of us, including a mate who was staying upstairs..

I should add, the mate who was upstairs was getting married at 11am & we’d all finished drinking in town about 4 hours earlier..

It was a legitimate life saver.. Particularly for him..

This is not a Steelers website. They are no more.
True Dragon supporters do not give a s### about the Steelers.
Lol..

So piss off back to your senior citizens club & complain about the youth of today..

Throw in Dean Schifilliti, a very good hooker as well.

I remember when the Steelers NRL team did not exist and the Illawarra junior clubs relied on St George for support. In those days
Illawarra players used to compete fiercely for positions in the St George team and they were always looked upon favourably if they were up to standard or showed promise.

Now there is not a 'joint venture' between St George or any other club. There is a 'partnership' between St George and WIN Corp. Like in the past, we still support clubs from the Illawarra and have a pathway program in place to welcome the talented players through the ranks into our NRL side.
