Jason Stevens will miss this weekend’s match against the Cowboys after the Sharks approached NRL Judiciary Chairman Greg Woods to amend his initial not-guilty plea to guilty for a grade one contrary conduct charge.

Cronulla’s legal counsel was unavailable yesterday when the plea was required however after reviewing the case this morning they have elected to plead guilty and accept the penalty.

The Chairman considered their request under section 105 (2) of the NRL Judiciary Code which states:

“The Chairman, as the case may be, may modify the provisions of this code in a way calculated to promote the just, speedy and inexpensive determination of proceedings.”

Jason Stevens will miss one week (112 demerit points).

Cronulla prop JASON STEVENS will miss this weekend's NRL clash
with North Queensland after reversing his initial not guilty plea
to a knee lifting charge.
STEVENS had been due to face the NRL judiciary tonight to fight
the grade one contrary conduct charge.
But after reviewing the case this morning, Cronulla's legal
counsel has elected to plead guilty and accept the one-match
suspension.
Canberra forward BEN CROSS will appear at the judiciary tonight
to contest a grade one careless high tackle charge.

We'd better give the guys a good dose of caffeine before they take the field. They are going to need all their energy to outplay the Cows at home. We wish them luck.

Can somebody clarify, if he had fought it and lost how many weeks would he have been suspended for?

I thought I had read in a previous thread that he was going to cop one week either way. If that was the case I am a little confused as to why you would plead guilty.

That'd be because it was reported incorrectly then transcribed into the forum.

If you fight a charge the grading is dropped and they start from scratch. They hear the case and establish guilt or innocence. If you are found guilty they then move onto "sentencing" so he could of in fact gotten more than a week. They would probably of looked at all the other times he did it in the match as well. I counted 6!

Wise decision not to fight it. I was against it from the start.

Mate that is so far off the mark.
They can only sentence you on the charge you came in for. They have no power to look at other incidents from that match or to increase the grading. They can down grade a charge but Stevo was only charged with a grade one so that would not have happened. He would have only got a week either way. He just took the discount on points for pleading guilty.

i think what mightysharks said is right

there is a maximum charge in all cases. that is, if you plead not guilty but get found guilty

i think that the only time they can increase your penalty is if you appeal the judicairy decision. dunley could have faced more than 4 weeks if the appeal commissioner thought the judiciary were too soft

from nrl.com:

Stevens will miss one match whether he accepts the early guilty plea or unsuccessfully fights the charge at the NRL judiciary.

from news.com.au

Stevens faces a one-match suspension if found guilty of knee-lifting by the NRL judiciary panel for a second time.

Wrong wrong wrong

Stevo was going to plead guilty and contest the charge. That by default also means the grade in this case as well because it was only a grade 1.

From the NRL Judiciary Code

Part 5.4 - The Hearing

Player to be Asked to Plead

79.
(1) At the commencement of the hearing, the Commissioner shall tender the Notice of Charge or the Notice of Referred Charge, following which the offence charged and, in the case of a Notice
of Charge, the grading therein specified shall be read to the Player and the Player shall be asked how he pleads.

(2) In the case of a charge preferred by a Notice of Charge:
(a) If the Player pleads guilty and accepts the grading for the offence, he shall be allocated the Elective Penalty specified in the Notice of Charge for a Late Plea and the proceedings are thereby concluded;
(b) If the Player pleads guilty but does not accept the grading for the offence specified in the Notice of Charge, the Judiciary shall proceed in accordance with Part 5.5;
(c) If the Player pleads not guilty, the Judiciary shall proceed in accordance with this Part to hear and determine the offence charged.
Chairman to Explain Procedure

80. Chairman to Explain Procedure
81. The Commissioner’s Case
82. The Player’s Case
83. Addresses
84. Directions to the Panel
85. Deliberations
86. Decision
87. Procedure When Verdict for Lesser Offence Returned

Part 5.5 - Sentencing

Application

88. This Part applies to a Player charged with an offence who has:
(1) N/A
(2) N/A
(3) Been found guilty of the offence by the Panel but does not accept the grading specified in the Notice of Charge within the meaning of Rule 86 or Rule 87.

Procedure to Determine Grading

90.
(1) N/A
(2) Without limiting sub-Rule (1), when determining the grading for an
offence:
(a) It is the function of the Panel and not the Chairman to
determine the grading;
(b) In so determining the grading, the Panel may ascribe a
grading which is greater or lesser than the grading specified in the Notice of Charge;
