Stone sacked, Buderus caretaker

Feel bad for Stone but it needed to happen.

Will this make it harder to have a clean out and sign new players if they're unsure who the coach will be for next year though?

Also, will we follow the trend of teams coming out and winning the week after having a coach sacked?

Text of the statement from the Knights website -

The Newcastle Knights’ Board met on Monday and advised Rick Stone’s position as head coach was untenable.

Danny Buderus will step in as interim coach until season’s end while the Club goes through a formal process to appoint the 2016 coach.

“We thank Rick for his efforts and loyalty over a long period of time and while these decisions are never easy, it was made in the best interests of the Club,” CEO Matt Gidley said.

“The Club will now undertake a formal review process of our entire football operations, of which the playing group are a key part, and all have the opportunity to demonstrate over the next seven weeks why they should retain their position.

“The Club strives to build a consistent, competitive and entertaining team and this formal review process will help us achieve this.”

Wow this is huge! Did not expect it to happen so soon.

Super curious as to how the players react to Buderus as head coach.

Also really interested as to how this came about, i.e if the senior players pushed him out or the execs made the decision based on performance.

I really hope it wasn't anything to do with the senior players because a lot of them are freaking lucky they're there themselves.

Whatever happens I just hope if we jag a couple of wins this year the club don't do anything stupid like give Bedsy the full-time job. There's absolutely no way he'll be able to make his mates accountable and the reason the attitude is so poor in the current squad is because they've been allowed to get away with it for too many seasons now. We need someone fresh to clear the cancer.

It really would be a case of pot/kettle.

Is Geoff Toovey a realistic chance? I think he would be the highest profile available, with the right mentality to break our false culture.

I don't think a coach deemed not good enough for his own club should be our target.

Toovey has also had more too work with than Stone this year and his results are just as terrible.

Toovey is being treated pretty poorly IMO. Very few clubs with a shit storm over their heads do well; we didn't last year and it showed in the last six weeks when it cleared up. At one point he had Foran and DCE ready to sign contracts that were reasonably priced but the new board dumped them. Their season could have been much better had they been signed then.

He's worth giving a chance to but my personal fear is that he might bring in the Manly deadwood that they're trying to clear.

Wow, stunned. Looks like they were listening after all, and have finally agreed to do something about it. There had better be a good chunk of players to follow him... and judging by that press release, the playing squad is next in the crosshairs - as it should be.

I'm going to give Stone credit for his reading of the game. In many of his press conferences he has shown an ability to assess the game and know how the failures cam about and what needs to be done.
I'll give him credit for that and his passion for the club.
What hasn't happened is converting that into action and taking making the hard decisions when they needed to be made. It's in part the nature of Stone and his loyalty and belief in some players (which they don't show themselves) but I reckon the '"cultural thing" in the club has played its part too.
You've been too soft Stoney.

LOL, his standard line this year has been "our second half was much better".

Newsflash Rick, teams tend to rack the cue when they're up by 30 at half time.

I guess we won't find out if Stone is true to his word when he said that he will be dropping players that arent putting in.

I feel sorry for Stone but picking Sione on the bench for weeks when it wasn;t working was the start of his issues. Not to mention not dropping BJ for his poor effort at training.

He reminds me too much of Hagan *shudders

I think this is the first time I can remember that the board and CEO have made themselves heard and tbh it's refreshing. I think most of us are looking for accountability and this is the ultimate statement of it. I think if Rick had tried a few things and imposed his authority he might've got more time but he just continually did the same thing over and over again

I have never seen a coach commit career suicide like that man! This squad shat on the one he had in 2009-11.

The 2009-2011 squad actually had a go though. Smith built a squad full of players that never gave up even if they didn't look good on paper.
