1. MEDIA RELEASE: 12 July 2004

AUSSIE LEGENDS COME TOGETHER TO HELP `STOP THE ROT' AT LEICHHARDT

A team of past and present sporting legends and celebrities have
joined forces with the Leichhardt community to back the `stop the
rot' campaign to rebuild Leichhardt Oval.

The oval's grandstands, which were built in 1913, have been severely attacked by white ants and are no longer considered safe. A
decision to demolish the grandstands was taken by Leichhardt Council
back in April and campaigners are now calling on the State Government
to step in and help the redevelopment of the ground to ensure that
the future of rugby league at this historic site is not jeopardised.

`Leichhardt Oval is the heartland of rugby league' said Tigers
Chairman, David Trodden

`This oval represents almost 100 years of heritage and history – investment is needed to make sure that the grandstands are rebuilt
and that other improvements, such as improvements to the toilet
facilities, disabled access and lighting can also take place.'

Millions of dollars are needed to redevelop the Oval, the majority of
which needs to come from State Government funding claims Leichhardt
Mayor, Cr Alice Murphy.

`Neither Council nor the Tigers can afford to fully fund the
redevelopment of the ground. The State Government must step in make
sure that this historic facility isn't lost for future generations of
Leichhardt residents and Tigers fans.'

Sporting legends and celebrities will come together on Thursday 15th
July, to draw attention to the plight of the Oval.

Dawn Fraser (Australian Legend), Paul Sironen (Balmain Great), Wayne
Pearce (Balmain Great), Gary Freeman (Balmain Great), Keith Barnes
(Balmain Great), Anthony Field (The Blue Wiggle), Alice Murphy
(Leichhardt Mayor), Mark O'Neill (Current Wests Tigers and Balmain
Champion), Darren Senter (Current Wests Tigers Captain), David
Trodden (Balmain Football Club Chairman) and Members of The Stop Rot
will all be present.

Tigers legend, Paul Sironen, said

`My favourite memories of my playing days include running out onto Leichhardt Oval to a packed hill with the Tigers chant echoing
around the ground. The atmosphere generated at grounds like
Leichhardt Oval can never be replaced; I hope that opportunity is
still available to our next generation of Tigers'

All news and sports media outlets are invited to join the team at
Leichhardt Oval on Thursday 15th July at 10am. More details follow
at the end of this release.

Stop The Rot Media Day a huge success: 15 July 2004

Today, the Stop the Rot Team was joined by prominent Tiger fans
united in their resolve to Stop the Rot and Save Leichhardt Oval.

The STR team would like to extend a huge thanks to Darren Senter,
Mark O'Neill, Wayne Pearce, Keith Barnes, Paul Sironen, Anthony
Field, Roy Slaven, Gary Freeman and Alice Murphy for their time and effort today.
We also received apologies from Ben Elias and Dawn Fraser who were
unable to attend.

Rob Rosenberg was in charge of the day and did a fantastic job along
with the help of Julie Burt and David Trodden. Great teamwork by all
involved.

This email is also to alert you to the fact that the Footy Show will
be running a story on the campaign tonight. Also keep an eye and ear
on the news on both television and radio networks this evening and
of course the papers in the coming days.

www.NRL.com has already posted an article on the campaign which is
great news.

Keith Barnes has also been very busy with radio interviews and we
thank him for that. He will be on 1269am very shortly so tune in if
you can.

Unfortunately, www.stoptherot.org has chosen the worst possible time
to crash on us. We are working on getting it back up but please keep
an eye on it in the next day or so for a heap of photos and news.

Thanks again to all involved and we look forward to seeing everyone
again on Saturday night!

Regards,

The Stop the Rot Team,

You honestly think the Tigers future is at Leichhardt Oval?

I promised myself I wouldn't reply to anymore of your posts but that one is quite sensible.

My response is Why Not?

Junior Pearce was spitting out some stats on the changing demographics back to families today but I won't get into that.

Why move from a ground that people LOVE??

Watch the Footy Show tonight and you might start to understand.

I should probably clarify that last message.

I would like to see the club's future split between Leichhardt and Campbelltown. Both represent our history and tradition.

If its so vital, why dont the Tigers pay for the upgrades instead of going cap in hand to the government and using tax payer funds on what is one of TWO stadiums the Tigers use?

Sincas - I really hope Saints get to play you there in the near future. We've been lumbered with that Double Headre the last two season & Stadium Australia sucks compared to good old Leichhardt.

Cheers,
Ben S.

The West Tigers have only been around for a few years.

Did Newcastle, St George-Illawarra, Parra or any other clubs ever pay for all of their stadiums?? The club, the Council and the fans are willing to help raise the funds.. but we need help just like those other clubs did.

It is a heritage listed ground so it ain't going anywhere, so why not upgrade it and make the most of a community asset rather than watch it deteriorate? Its not a large sum in the grand scheme of things and there is plenty of tax payer money wasted on far less worthy causes i'm sure.

I take your points but we have 7000 people (many tax payers) so far who disagree and think their tax payer money would be well spent in fixing up a great ground. We expect plenty more signatures too..

As for the tradition comment, try telling that to our fans. We are all proud of Balmain and Western Suburbs and the traditions that this joint venture is founded on.

Thats right mate. Hopefully it will happen. Unfortunately we didn't have much fun at Kogarah but it was great to attend a ground like that rather than Stadium Australia.

I still have nightmares of the last time we played you at leichhardt when Blacklock broke our hearts with that last second chip and chase..

Until we get this ground fixed up, we are going to have to put up with more games at Telstra because of the financial benefits.

Newcastle is a regional center and needed a top class sporting facility years ago.

Win Stadium, once again a regional center.

As for Parramatta Stadium.....two wrongs dont make a right. Parramatta should have payed for their upgrades as well. Howevere keep in mind that their upgrades turned a VERY GOOD stadium into an all seater stadium.

At Leichhardt Oval you want $2,000,000 to upgrade a terrible, falloing down stadium into a terrible....not falling down any more stadium!

If Leichhardt Oval is so important to the tradition of the Balmain Tigers reserve Premier League side....then why dont they pay for the upgrades to that stadium?

hahahaha.

As I said, there are a lot of people that disagree with you and your definition of a terrible stadium. Watch the news tonight, watch the footy show, read the papers and count the petitions..

Fortunately you are not somebody we are submitting our petitions and proposals to and your non-attendance at future games there will only enhance the fantastic atmosphere.

And there you have it.

Anyone that questions this waste of tax payer funds towards a completely outdated Stadium get some little smart ar$e comment.

The best thing that could happen is for that place to burn down so you can claim insurance on it!

You're an angry little ant, aren't you?!

Tell us what makes a good stadium in your eyes, LF, because I've been to Penriff a few times & I'm stumped as to why you're taking the high ground here.

Cheers,
Ben S.

What type of comment do you call this then?

If Leichhardt Oval is so important to the tradition of the Balmain Tigers reserve Premier League side....then why dont they pay for the upgrades to that stadium?

You are entitled to your opinion, just as everyone else is. Fortunately we have found many, many people that don't share yours. Fortunately they pay taxes too. I've answered your questions and stated our opinion.

If you think having this ground upgraded is just for the benefit of the Balmain Tigers Premier League side then you have no knowledge of this topic at all.
