Stopping the clock at the scrum.

What I look forward to seeing is when a few backs pack into a scrum quickly and have to stay there, then the other team decides to go the push... could see a few go against the feed if that happens.

About time this changed , it annoyed me when the backs would pack the scrum , stop the clock then the forwards would stroll across to replace the backs in the scrum. If whoever packs in then they should stay there. simple.

Or a proliferation of scrum penalties.

Every time rules are changed something unexpected results.

This rule is not being/changed introduced to introduce a contest for the ball into the game nor is it to create more infringements. See what happens.

Can some-one please explain to me why they changed the rule so that the players that pack the scrum have to stay there.

Let me guess, this was a coaches initiated change.

When are the clowns who run this game going to realise that coaches only make decisions based on how it affects them.

It was because of a game a few years ago between Canberra and Saints I think

Anyway the scores were close and there was 30 seconds on the clock and there was a scrum. The scrum packed and the ball had to be re-fed a couple of times. Each time the ref blew time-off and eventually Saints got the ball and kicked a field goal to win/tie the match (can't remember)

Anyway, the league realised that there was no consistancy as to when the time-off should be called for scrums or not so they put in this rule so that there is a solid base on when to call time off.

I think it is a good rule as it also removes time-wasting when a team is ahead and don't get to the scrum but the other team is keen to get on with things

The rule is already being rorted. Watch Thurston - packs in the front row and walks away as soon as he gets the chance.

thats sneaky and i loved it from thurston
but you wont expect that to happen each week, wait till it happens and a ref is clued on to it and forces him to pack in. Hilarity will ensue

The thing is though, the rule is only that the clock stays off while the scrum remains pack, so all Thurston has to do in that situation is hang around there until his forwards show up, then they can just reshuffle for the feed. The implementation of the rule is toothless, it will not fix or change anything.

Technically the players don't have to pack down in the scrum at all.

Thurston was not breaking the rules. He got in the scrum to stop the clock, stayed in it until brisbane was ready, then jumped out and allowed fat merkin Webb to jump in.

Clock restarted when he left the scrum. Only cost an extra 4-5 seconds max for him to run around the back and feed the ball.

Clever stuff by Thurston.

I thought the rule was when it was packed that they had to stay there..

It is stupid to stop the clock then take 5 seconds to adjust proper positions and off we go..

How good was it to see Saints actually win a scrum against the feed tonight! Priceless!!

Except, as Ray Warren said, the Saints hooker should've been done for "feet across" the tunnel.

But then again, even me saying he should have been penalised is a throwback to the early 1980s!
