Storm fury at Nine

Once again the night the Olympic games are starting surley Cold case and the like won't pinch ratings off 7, so show the bloody game live.

I think the opening ceremony starts at 10pm, so it'd be perfect to have the Melbourne game on live before this. Some vics might watch their NRL team on nine before settling in for the Olympic coverage.

Maybe if channel 9 advertised it, it would of rated better. I had no idea that game was on live, and suprised it got 73k to be honest.

F*ck I hate channel 9, like you keep saying, they do more to promote that poor excuse of a sport - AFL, over NRL. Pathetic!

I agree. That was a one-off game that Channel 9 didn't advertise at all. Most people would not have known it was on. 73k is ok in the circumstances.

The Swans got 78k for a live Sunday game in Sydney earlier in the year yet everyone knows when they are on FTA because it's promoted to buggery.

Since when…is the AFL feeding you southerners the old porky pies….

In Sydney the Friday night AFL is delayed on FOX (starts around 11pm) as is the coverage on Channel 7 (normally around 11.00 to 11.30pm), a few posters from the southern state have these illusions that the AFL is on in prime time in Sydney….stop deluding yourselves because it isn’t, only Swans Saturday night games usually get a live 7.30pm prime time start, if you call Saturday night prime time

AFL gets more FTA coverage in Sydney on weekends than rugby league does!!

2 sometimes 3 live or prime time games then 2 others late at night. 5 FTA games!!!

Compare this to 3 NRL games (1 of which doesn't finish until 11.30pm Fri night) No NRL at all on FTA on Saturdays in Sydney.

I dunno how this will rate. I'd be surprised if too many people knew it was a top of the table clash down here. Either Nine has seen that its CSI and what not will rate better, or they are trying to quell the games influence in Melbourne. Either way, it just shows how inept the NRL have been in negotiating the TV rights deal in that they arent responsible for showing any games live in Melbourne really

My reply was in relation to an impression some from Victoria seem to have that AFL gets great coverage in Sydney, it doesn't.

Um:

No one thinks thats AFL is live on FTA Friday night in Sydney. What Melbourne NRL fans have an issue with is that FOX show the AFL live on Main Event in NSW and Qld on Friday night.

All Melbourne League fans want is the same, its a pity the NRL couldn't give a sh*t!

Exactly.

What Melbourne NRL fans have an issue with is that FOX show the AFL live on Main Event in NSW and Qld on Friday night.

9's original AFL bid was for all 8 games each week to be shown live in all capital cities on either 9 or Fox. When 7 & 10 enacted their "first & last rights" clause, they had to match the coverage that 9 had set them up for.

It will always be a bone of contention, whether Kerry Packer bid so high with so many features in the bid as a serious bid because he wanted the AFL on 9, or whether he was doing it as a "screw you" to Channel 7.

This is all completely understood.

However it does not impact Foxtels ability operationaly or financialy to match the FNF Main Event coverage into Victoria. The NRL should be insisting on this at the very least.

Nothing rates in the 10.30pm timeslot regardless of what else is on, but at least it's a slight improvement.

Still a disgrace. NRL's fault though.

Free-to-air that doesn't rely on advertising revenue.

David Gallop stated last year that it was written into the contract that if Channel 9 Melb didn't show games before 12am then the NRL had the power to shift matches to SBS or the ABC in Melbourne. This is what we mean by "Use it or Lose it"

Because it came from the mouth of MR Gallop I suspected it was a hollow threat at the time and unfortunately my thoughts have been justified.

When quizzed on the issue on 2SM earlier in the year Gallop had the gall to say that Channel 9 in Melbourne was now complying with the league which of course they are not.

Yet theres f**k all change! Nein are a disgrace. Still dirty about losing their poor AFL rights.

If they show Origin live into Melbourne... Then they should be showing a game such as this. I don't care if it rates well or not, the support rugby league and the NRL has given to channel 9 over the years should be worthy of a live telecast for a such a game.

They complain about poor ratings in Melbourne, but if they show Storm games every week at a reasonable time, and promote them, then people may start watching, start supporting and all of a sudden Melbourne's interest in the game will pick up heavily. And surely this is a heavy advantage for Channel 9.

Everyone I know who lives in Melbourne, doesn't even understand the point of rugby league. The questions they ask are out there.

"So they get a goal when they put the ball over the line... why do they get a kick after that. What's that called?"

"When they're tackled, why do they stop, can't they get up and run again?"

The only way Melbourne people are going to understand rugby league and support it, is by Nine promoting games such as these.

Don't forget the old chestnut "why do they pass backwards when the point is to go forward?"

The latter option is spot on.

Giving Channel 7 the rugby league rights would be the most detrimental decision to affect our game. They have their heads so far up the arses of the AFL and ARU.

A move to 7 would destroy the game in my opinion and I hope it never happens.

i've seen more promotion for AFL on 9 than i have 7. they couldn't possibly be worse
