Tolkien made it perfectly clear in the book that the only reason they have a chance of getting to Mt Doom and destroying the ring is because it would never enter Sauron's mind that anybody would want to destroy it. The Dark Lord sees everybody as being as power-hungry and ambitious as himself. He expects anybody who gets their hands on the ring to be corrupted by it. He thinks that they will show up with an army to try to take Mordor by force.
