The original competition consisted of three teams from New Zealand, Canterbury, Wellington and Auckland. The other teams were Queensland, New South Wales and Fiji. The Championship was relaunched in 1992 after Australia had won the World Cup as the Super Sixes. The competition proved such a success the following year it was expanded and re-named the Super Tens and embraced South African teams and Western Samoa also joined the fray, with Fiji making way for them. It was then in 1995 when the Murdoch package was launched and the Super 12 developed into one of the most eagerly awaited events on the rugby calendar. It has been the launching pad for many international super stars and it has no doubt helped increase the popularity of the code worldwide.
