Super 8's

By my numbers that's 25million and Change to the clubs. Any idea what total Rfl revenue is?

Have they moved into the new television deal yet? I remember they signed an extension with sky sports a couple of years ago too much fanfare from the Rfl which seemed give a small increase in revenue. Doesn't seem to have translated into improved grants?

I'm it would still be better to reduce the 2nd tier to 10 clubs and distribute the money across the 10 clubs evenly. Just reduces the likely hood of cannon fodder games at this level and increase the quality.

Don't try and work out the money..some of it dissapears in backhanders...eg each ESL club got £300,000 each for just agreeing to the tv deal..so thats £3.6m gone

ive just gone through all the figures and what the RFL should have done..

so..if we put all the money into a pot, thats £182.2m for club, challenge cup & internationals..plus the £17.8m thats supposed to go into clubs charitable foundations,no evidence this has happened yet by the way..

but anyway..thats £200m over 5 years..thats £40m a year

12 ESL clubs get £1.825m a season, they get their salary cap paid

12 champ clubs get £600,000 a season, granted not enough for all clubs to go fulltime, but all clubs will be able to run reserves/juniors.

14 league one clubs get £300,000 a season, as above, development clubs will be able to run junior development.

all that comes to £33.3m a season which leave the RFL £6.7m a season to do with as it pleases...promote the game, put money into grassroots development, coaches, give chairmen backhanders to stop em effing whinging.. etc..

it pains me it wasn't done this way, especially when ESL clubs get the same money in my plan as they will next year anyway..begs the question..wheres the money going?

just to help you aussies out

our tv deal is worth roughly $340m

and cap is $3m..

the marquee player rule is..a club trained player only goes on the cap at £100,000 meaning a sam tomkins who might be paid £300,000+ but only goes on wigans cap as £100,000..

a non club trained player goes down on the cap at £175,000..meaning a cooper cronk who might be paid £400,000+ ($700,000,not too shabby) but only goes on oldhams cap as £175,000....lol thats more than our turnover for the year haha

That funding model is a mess.. The best thing they could do to grow the sport is to fund expansion teams in the championship and league1

I still feel they are trying to cram too many teams into 3 divisions, less teams per division with a similar or slightly less number of games is a achievable.

Super league- 12 teams with 22 home and away, magic weekend, top 6 split for 5 games then Gf, ccup. Current cap/grant

Bottom Sl v top Championship for promotion/relegation.

Championship- 10 teams with 27 home and away, magic weekend and cup. Current cap/500k grant

Champ one- 14 teams with 26 home and away, top spot promoted, 2nd-4th and 9th in championship play-off series for 2nd promotion spot. maybe 2 of the current bottom clubs could be kept for 16 clubs. 120k grant.

Conference south- current teams plus Coventry, hemel, oxford, Gloucester, south Wales.

Take league one it's got 16 teams next year. 5 of which Gloucester, Coventry, hemel, oxford and south Wales get hammered routinely except when they play each other. I don't know how long the Rfl is willing to wait before they are reasonably competitive, it could be 5-10 years before one or more to have improved enough to climb the ladder. That says to me that they should be moved down a level to the conference south. If we create a strong southern league that can be the focus of development and reasonably competitive it would be much better than the current setup.

Leigh narrowly beat Salford 32-26 giving them 2 wins from 2 in the super 8s. I would suggest of their games against hull kr (away) and Huddersfield (home) they can potentially snag another win v super league opposition. They also play fev and batley which would most likely be wins. 3rd is not out of the question for them.

'Conference South' is a terrible idea. You're just relegating them back to amateur status.

They are basically playing amateur level rugby league in a semi pro competition.

I would like to be wrong and see all of the southern clubs come on strong in time to make a really competitive 3rd tier and even better the likes of Coventry moving up the leagues. But somehow I think it's a long shot for all of those teama

No league one club is going to become strong on a £75,000 grant..

Also playing in regional conferences will be counter productive cos the development clubs need to play against the likes of rochdale, barrow, york, newcastle and teams that might get relegated like us,swinton,workington,whitehaven..

Dropping teams at the first sign of failure is not going to help. They will improve with experience if they stick it out (better funding wouldn't go astray)

Had a thought that if they kept the super 8 splits but made the super league group a different format. If they want more games that matter then what about this. Give each side in the group 4 matches with the opposition determined by table position after 22/23 rounds. Then knock out the bottom 2 sides with the top 6 moving on to finals series ending with the grand final. This would increase the value of the format instantly and make the battle for 5th and 6th to stay alive very appealing.

Sure it's gotten to the stage where every alternative has been mooted by a forum poster somewhere.. but FWIW.

If the UK clubs want P&R fine, but have Franchising for French clubs who clearly don't benefit from P&R. So..

Have 12 or 14 teams in SL with a guaranteed number of French clubs, reviewed every 3 years as to which clubs and how many. So when the RFL & FFR both agree France can support 2 SL clubs they add a Franchise, then reassess every 3 years if there should be 3 or one of the current French clubs replaced etc.

Catalans got smashed by hull last night. Makes it a 4 point gap between Catalans and saints who have a game in hand.

Very hard to see how the current super 8 structure can continue especially if next year dishes up more of the same.

Fridays results

Salford 12 v hull Kr 29
Wigan 25 v St Helens 0

4 more weeks of largely meaningless games to come on the top 8.

Salford needed find their form to avoid the sudden death qualifier but after the early games it looks like Salford and Leigh are most likely for 4the and 5th. assuming Leigh wins on Sunday at featherstone it keeps them in contention for top 3 and puts Salford under enormous pressure. I reckon koukash will walk away if they get relegated that's if he doesn't anyway

I woudnt be surprised if Huddersfield find themselves playing Salford in the million pound game. No doubt Koukash is as good as gone if Salford are relegated.

I haven't followed the Super League too closely these past few months, but it sure does seem set in stone who will be in the semis/final. Catalans have been disappointing, Widnes too after their strong start to the year.

Hopefully Leigh can push for gaining promotion this year to liven up the Super 8's format. Doesn't seem to have worked out as intended so far.

They gave it a really good shake. They arent far off, hopefully another year has them ready. A few lapses in execution and pieces of bad luck but that's rugby league.

If Soward catches that flick ball, and the touch judge does his job on the penalty kicks, it could have been a much closer score.

Watkins dropping it over the line was hilarious, paid for arrogance

London have given the 8's a good shake, really pushed Leeds which was a pleasant surprise.

You'd have to think Leigh account for Featherstone & Batley, giving them 4 wins. Makes their showdowns with the other SL cubs all the more tantalising given victory in one of those 3 would almost assure them of a top 3 finish and thus promotion.

Leeds will go through unbeaten. Hull KR second. Leigh 3rd with Huddersfield hosting the million pounder. Possibly.
