Tongariro alpine crossing + climbing Mt. Ngauruhoe
Mt Ngauruhoe
Looking down into the volcano crater at the top of Mt Ngauruhoe
Emerald Lakes to right, Blue Lake to the left, looking down from red crater
Red Crater, Ngauruhoe, Mt. Ruapehu from right to left
On top of Mt Ngauruhoe, looking out towards tongaririo and, further back, lake taupo. You trek up to south crater as part of the crossing, approx 1600m elevation, and from there go off a side track and get up to 2291m. after the first bit, which is kind of cruisy, it is very very steep, with no real solid footing. It's all tephra on the way up, fragmental material, so you just sink your feet in a slide around and grab rocks to get up, I even slipped on some snow. On the way down it takes about 20 minutes, just slip and slide down, it's sick. Climbing was spectacular, proper volcanic crater up the top and probably the most dificult thing I have done.
