terrible comparison.
brl became q cup and q cup in its own right is a great competition with great teams and systems within most teams im guessing.
how did the nz comp go? blokes here are saying it’s weaker. So outside warriors and the system in place that filters through the warriors ie nsw cup jersey flegg sg ball Harold matts which is all part of nsw competition anyways how’s the actual comp within nz (their reserve comp) going?
If it’s weaker than it used to be then the game might be going gang busters in mainstream but it’s grass roots might not necessarily be in a competitive shape. How’s their amateur or semi pro game going? The two kiwi brothers here say it’s not good, I take their word for it. what does a colombian and a bloke over here know more? can use all the internet websites you want to but sometimes unless you see things with feet on ground it paints different picture.
nrl teams attract crowds, it’s what pro sports do or should do not sure why even bring it up.
Hi all. Bare with me here. I live in ChCh - This chat thread, I think, started off as would a 2nd NRL Team be a success in NZ. I'm not 100% convinced that the "Grassroots" comps have much impact on that argument. My ex son in law played in the "bush" leagues in Newcastle for 10 yrs. Cessnock and Wyon ? That is one of the "breeding grounds for the NRL sides. And as far as I know, which maybe be miles wrong - no players have come from those comps since the Johns boys. My point is, if you looked at ALL local grassroot sides (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Greater QLD - how many NRL players get picked from them?? Most, if not all players get picked from Rep sides, school sides and NRL academies that have spotted those kids with potential early. I have a friend here in ChCh whose 14yr old son has just been "poached" by the Dogs to go into their academy. He was spotted at a school tournament. And any new NRL side will be picking established players and they will then, eventually, set up their own NSW Cup, J Flegg, HM sides, which will then, and only then, raise the local club level, in my humble opinion, and those kids with promise will be put into the academy of the new club. That's my thoughts anyway. But, having said all that ... We in NZ do need another competition above the local "clubland". The Bartercard Cup, at the start, was awesome and with the dollars, apparently being pumped into NZRL via the NRL, the NZRL should be making that a major priority. .
