Ahh family

Wait till they start to point out everyting you are doing wrong as a parent

I have a very large yet blunt machete from Tonga in the garage I'm considering sharpening to ward off such questions...

Drew this might be a stupid question but you guys know the alcohol is also excreted in the breast milk

Yeah, we're using formula right now until her milk comes through properly. She expresses in the night then we have a glass of wine and she expresses again the next morning. She has maybe a quarter glass of wine so its not enormous.

A single glass directly after feeding is ok - a couple of hours will clear it from the bloodstream.

Our midwife actually recommended a little beer if there was a blocked duct. The alcohol helps the vessels dilate and the calories assist in production.

Just ensure a gap of at least 2 hours between the last sip and the next feed.

Try and feed directly as much as she can. It will help sort out latch issues and you won't have to faff about sterilising things!

The nipples will also toughen up faster that way.

Yeah, definitely leave 2 hours between it all.

The main thing is volume; she latches well, wife has good technique etc. There's just not enough sadly :( It's coming though.

Ok, so here goes some helpful ideas.
First the general principles.
Breast milk is made on the principle of supply and demand
a feed consists of two parts (like meals for us if you like ) the fore milk is the entree and the hind milk is the main course. If a baby gets more of the watery fore milk and then comes off ,and then feeds again in say 20 minutes because they have only had mostly watery milk then they again get the fore milk ...and so on. that's why it's important that bub gets to the hind milk at every feed .You can tel that the hind milk has come because bub will gulp it down( because it comes out faster)

When bub gets more of the hind milk they will be more satisfied, gain weight ,and mum will make more milk.
The more bub takes of the hind milk ,the more mum will make.

The best things for a blocked duct are more properly positioned feeding ,a warm shower and a gentle rub of the area( the beer idea is really an old wives tale )

The best people to give advice about Breastfeeding widen mum and bub are normal ,is Breastfeeding Australia.
The phone number is on the back of the Blue Book you got from the hospital.

Nooo the nipples don't have to toughen p .Bub needs to be attached properly and mum should be relaxed .

When a baby is feeding properly the nipple goes down the back to the throat and is not rubbing against anything. The baby's mouth is wrapped around the areole area( the pumping spot for the milk ducts if you like) They used to talk about the Special K mouth.

But you are on to something with the direct feeding.Best solution for all the issues of supply .

I remember the first six weeks with my first son as excruciating .i was bleeding from both ends and crying alot.
When I found out he had a minor tongue tie it made alot more sense.

Just on the milk dress child isn't that old ( like a few days) so maybe the good milk hasn't kicked in yet. Could it still be the antibiotic stuff that come first ? ( I can't remember its proper Latin name)
