2013 was the worst year in my life.

Being a tad superstitious I'm hoping it was all because of the last 2 numbers in the year and that this year is a whole lot better. Tbh the importance of football was way down on my scale this year, normally its all I think about but this year friends and family were my priority, as they should have been before but I've been too f**king selfish and ignorant over the last few years, time to grow up a bit.

2013 started off really well for me. When the company I worked for went under at the end of August, the year just fell apart. So I had half a great year, and half a balls year.

Starting 2014 with a new job, hopefully this lasts the whole year!

Last year really wasn't so bad in the grand scheme of my life.

My ride "forgot" they were picking me up from the airport. I'm murderous right now.

It depends what you want from Asia, there are all sorts of options but Malaysia is one of the more upmarket destinations and they have the best Chilli Mudcrab in the world.

Malaysia is a fantastic country. It offers a lot of variety depending on what you're looking for and what you want to do, plus it is split in two. Check your dates, the eastern side gets hit with typhoons during part of the year.

Cameron Highlands is for tea and jungle trekking, Malacca is a brilliant, historic seaport, Penang is a cool island and Langkawi offers up some Western style luxury.

NZ?

I've heard Malaysia is shit. You;d probably get better, cheaper in other SE Asia areas like Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam

Malaysia shits all over everything about NZ. You won't find better, cheaper food anywhere and it's more modern than anywhere else in SE Asia bar Singapore at a very similar price. Fantastic place.

But yeah, check rain vs your dates as it gets both northern and southern monsoons. That said, in the two years I lived there I never had a day of solid rain. It's generally all unleashed in storms.

Hong Kong and Macau are more modern too. Thailand is seems to be as well.
But value for dollar few places top Malaysia.

I can't decide how I feel about my New Year's Eve.

On the plus side; myself, Beeker, another mate, my brother, and his missus drank up on a storm on a boat in the Yangtze river, which was pretty rad. Flirted with a cute (different) Polish girl who Beeker did not approve of because of her strong jaw. I'd still go there, but alas, I lost track of her.

Once we got off the boat, though, it's all a bit of a shitty blur. I lost my shirt and jacket (have since found both in the hands of different people), fell over and banged up my knee, tried to steal somebody else's jacket, and basically spent two hours staggering around a club I hate.

I then came home and ate two tins of soup, tried to watch The Hobbit, and fell asleep until 2pm.

The thing I find with Thailand is all the more modern places are full of shithead drunk Aussies, aren't actually that cheap, and are loaded with tourist traps... and all the interesting places are a lot more rustic. Which I love, but a lot don't. It's not the worst place around by any means but I think you get better value out of Malaysia and Vietnam.

Macau and Hong Kong certainly are but I wouldn't personally count them as part of SE Asia

Sounds successful to me!

NZ is phenomenal. Mountains, snow (granted, not this time of year), adventure lifestyle. Love New Zealand

I loved New Zealand. Great country for anybody with an appreciation of natural beauty or a bit of an appetite for thrill.

Adored Thailand, both as a touristy spectacle (Phuket) and for natural beauty and lovely people (outside of the cities). Cambodia, for me, is perfect. Such warm people, lots of beautiful scenery, Angkor Wat/Thom, the Killing Fields, brilliant beaches in the south, and all dirt cheap.

Thinking Penang, Langkawi and then probably finish up with a few days in KL so the missus can spend whatever cash we have left over before the trip home. I like a bit of diversity in a holiday and Malaysia sounds like it offers that. I've done Thailand to death and I have no ambition to go near Bali. Probably a toss up between Malaysia, Laos / Vietnam or the Philippines. Waiting to see what Mis thinks of the Phillipines after his trip in a few weeks.

New Zealand only appeals to me in terms of the natural side of it. Beautiful place, but otherwise culturally uninteresting to me.

Would love to go to Cambodia.
