Moral dilemma firkers:

Soooooooo my dogs stayed at my inlaws last night (along with the wife, kids and me) and they decided to jump the fence into the next door neighbours chook pen and chow down on the lone chicken inside overnight.

This morning I go out to check on them and there is a 3m radius feather zone, 1 leg and part of what looks like a neck in the corner of the yard. I got some plastic bags and picked it all up because I dont want the kids to come outside and see/touch what is left.

We take the dogs over there regularly and aside from some curious sniffing, they have never even looked like they wanted to get at the chook. The "pen" they have constructed is basically made of that cheap pet fence you get at Bunnings with no roof or other protection. They are on acreage so there is tonnes of land and bush around and I have spotted plenty of feral cats, dogs and the occasional fox in the area

They are the type of neighbours that dont socialise much so we dont know them very well. The laws in Qld mean that if a complaint is made to the council and its proven that a dog has harmed or even scared a human or "pet", then they can be deemed "dangerous" and with that comes a whole myriad of restrictions that we really cant afford or want to inflict on our beloved furry kids. They really are a pair of sooks and Im shocked they have done this but in the end they are animals and chickens are pretty much the quintessential prey in the animal kingdom

Should we tell them? Not tell them? Give them a partial truth ie: We found the parts, cleaned it up, think it was a feral animal? I am genuinely stumped with which way I should go

Tell them it was the chickens fault for being tasty.

Seriously though, just tell them it was your dogs, offer to replace the chicken with a new one as well as any $$ compensation, offer to build them a new chicken coup and claim you'll never bring the dogs within the vicinity of the house again unsupervised or off the leash.

After all, if another dog jumped the fence and killed your animal, would you like to know what happened?

If they take it further, then sure - its an issue but its also the right thing to do.

My dog in Tonga destroyed a lot of chickens. It cost me a bomb to replace them to the owners and meant I could never let him off the leash when chickens came near him, but that's the price of parenthood.

dress up like colonel harland sanders, have a couple of feathers sticking out of your mouth, smear some chook blood on your face & hands..

then knock on their door and tell them that the chook would have been tastier if it was deep fried..

or just go sit in the middle of that radius of feathers, grab the leg bit and pretend to be gnawing on it..

helps if you're naked too..

chances are when the neighbors see that, they'll cut their losses and not say anything..

lol so helpful

Telling them the whole truth is a huge risk given the laws I outlined. Im not sure I can risk having 1 or both of my dogs being declared dangerous over this.

The issue butch is that they live next to my inlaws and I have zero faith in them being able to hold up under pressure if the neighbours ask them directly about the chicken. There is no evidence in the yard but my father in law in particular is a straight up and down guy (20 year military man) and struggles big time with half truths.

Do your inlaws know what happened ?

Outline to them what will happen if they squeal ? Tell them they can explain to your kids why the dogs are being put to death
