rubbish.. if the fuel tanks are empty, the plane will be lighter so it should be able to fly higher...
yes, i know this is incorrect, you dolt...

It could glide for a few km's depending on the skill of the pilot.

I think we live in a world where supressing the idea of death, and doing everything possible to 'make yourself immortal' via surgery, medicine etc has seen us become so distracted from our own mortality. Yet mortality is one of the most compelling parts of the human condition.

I saw a guy on the ground at Sutherland shops two months ago. People were gathered around him trying to resuscitate him for what I suspect was a heart attack. People stared, not because they were trying to be rude or inconsiderate to he, his wife or those trying to help him, but simply because our world sanitises this and we don't see it as often as we probably should.

IDK, just some thoughts.

IDK if this is a bad thing though. You read some of the stuff that is written by soldiers during times of war when they have become used to the whole idea of death and seeing maimed and mutilated bodies on a regular basis. Some of the stories of what these guys get up to are truly horrific. In most cases, these are people who were "normal" members of society, enlisted when war broke out and just filter back into society when the war is done. After they have done some of the most monstrous, depraved and disgusting things in the name of war.

Perhaps the less we have to do with that side of things and the more sanitised it is, the better?

Yep, as said, it's only natural.

Channel 9 just exploit it til it makes you sick. Nobody glorifies criminal behaviour more. Bogans love it.

Come to think of it, Channel 9 is bogan in it's purest form.

Well... According to a movie I watched the other night, this is all Ron Burgundy's fault.

He changed the way that the news is reported.

It was in a movie so it must be right.

Agree that war changes people and to be 'awash' with death images is not healthy. I think its a spectrum though.

I guess I'm suggesting we need to take our mortality more seriously, whilst respecting it. A tension, to be sure, but just my thoughts.

it's human nature to be fascinated with things that are new & unknown, but impact us..

it's why when a new car model is released, people stare at it, but a few years down the track when it's well known & is everywhere, you don't even notice them..

it's why city folk can walk past a sleeping homeless person and not even notice him, but a child or someone from out of town will stare..

ask a blonde woman the reaction she gets when she travels to countries where blonde hair is only usually seen on TV or photos..

the same with car crashes - you see hundreds or thousands of cars per day.. but may only see one smash in a month..

it's why seeing an open wound may stick in your mind, but for a surgeon it's just the everyday..

the more you are exposed to something, the more de-sensitized you become...

we're pretty simple creatures to understand, really..
Apparently when I went to NZ aged about 2 or so the asians around there couldn't get enough of my red hair.

On the death thing, having had a friend die recently who was young knocks you around a bit. Really shouldn't be dying at 23, when you have 60 odd years ahead of you.

I think she had a viewing the night before the funeral as well, not that I went (wasn't heaps close). The viewings are kind of horrible, my Grandpa has an open coffin just before the bit at the cemetary, pretty horrible. Wasn't really any connection between that body and the person who he was.

Could you leave spoilers out of the thread, BM? Not everybody has managed to catch it yet. I'm still ten episodes behind after not being able to stomach the two dimensional characters and predictable comedic set pieces anymore.

But HIMYM was a huge part of my early life away from home. I was one of those guys who suited up on weekends, quoted the show ad nauseum, and even had a group of friends in which I was Marshal and we had a Lily, Stinson, and Mosby.

HIMYM was as big a part of my life also.

And I didn't spoil. I just stated my opinion on the finale. Some people think it ended perfectly, other people think it was a disaster. I'm in the latter. But saying you hate something is not the same as spoiling. You might love it.

The second half of the season before the finale is very hit and miss. Some episodes worthy of being up there among the best ever, in between some stinkers. 5-6 eps of the last 10 are classic.

Wasn't saying you were posting spoilers, just asking you not to :D

Got through the last nine episodes last night. A couple of dud filler episodes there, but overall it was a great finish to a show I loved for a long time and only gave up on in the last 1-2 seasons.

watched it on occasion but not to any great extent. After ive finished with breaking bad, dexter, Sherlock, homeland, house of cards and the americans I might give it a proper go if I can find someone to borrow it off

In fact 1998 was just bad year in general.

Seinfeld. Family Matters. Step by Step.

What was a boy supposed to watch now? Lucky Baywatch was still going.

You liked the finale itself? It was fine except for the bit where it was ALL WRONG.

I don't feel like it was all wrong at all. It played out just how life itself tends to play out: friends drift apart, relationships end, and it's not always a fairytale.

The over-arcing narrative of the show was always Ted & Robin, so it made sense to tie it up the way they did.

The over-arcing narrative of the show was always Ted & Robin, so it made sense to tie it up the way they did.

It started out as the Ted and Robin show but as HIMYM got more seasons than they ever expected we saw all the reasons why they're awful for each other. Then Tracy comes along and her chemistry with Ted blows away anything he ever had with Robin. I read an article about how the creators pushed themselves into a corner and all the reasons why you shouldn't know how a show ends when you're creating it. You don't allow for the natural development of characters.

Bottom line, I think the conclusion they had in 2005 seemed right at the time but by 2014 the show and all of the characters were heading in a different direction and they should have adapted to that.

In my mind the finale really ends at precisely the 40:00 mark at the end of the perfectly written and acted scene at the station. The last 3 and a half minutes are a horrible April Fools joke.
