I have a friend (yes, I have friends) who is enrolling in a University degree today because he was scared that Tony Abbott was going to take his money away.

$30,000+ down the track to keep $400 a fortnight now. Hope he doesn't do an economics degree.

Why not? Down the track he might be able to smoke cigars in Canberra. :p

I'm also enrolling in Uni today (enrolment deadline is today at Open Universities Australia) but I'm not geniused and I've had these plans for months. My friend is acting on a thought bubble based on a Tony Abbott thought bubble that isn't even guaranteed to get through the Senate.

But knowing my luck this bloke will do this half arsed like he does everything else half arsed and yet somehow end up being my boss 5 years from now.

Good luck on getting your course. Which one are you looking at?

Im sitting either a bit over or right on distinction level for every subject at present, which is nice. Sick of commuting though, im useless in the mornings at present thanks to commuting/working nights im not at uni.

Feel like an old man after the half marathon the other day, been using the rail support of all the bloody stairs at UNSW.

I'm guessing the UTS protests are in full swing at the moment. Tony Abbott needs to suck some lemons.

I've got it narrowed down to one of thse 5:

http://www.open.edu.au/courses/arts...communications--cur-net-deg-2014#course-units
http://www.open.edu.au/courses/arts...r-of-communication--grf-com-deg-2014#overview
http://www.open.edu.au/courses/busi...y-chain-management--rmi-log-deg-2014#overview
http://www.open.edu.au/courses/it/r...puting-studies--rmi-cpt-deg-2014#course-units
http://www.open.edu.au/courses/it/s...nformation-systems--swi-cis-deg-2014#overview

Mostly either Communication or Technology interest me. But I'm not too attached to any. All those are open entry so anyone can do them. If I picked one and didn't like it the important thing would just be to complete and pass 4 units and then I can get into almost any degree in a real offline uni.
If I do go into policing for real one day it certainly won't be in NSW.

In NSW you have a $30k HECS debt and for the 8 months of study you get Youth Allowance which is $200 a week.

In Victoria you get no HECS debt and are paid a wage from day 1 of study. So you actually end up financially ahead just by joining the police academy. Rather than the alternative which is basically no income and a big debt just for committing yourself to public service.

If a Police force ever gets the privilege of BM's service it will be Victoria Police, not the stingy organisation in this state.
He is scared of the monster that he has created

Clive Palmer is the X factor here. If he's smart he could singlehandedly bring an early election (by just voting against the things the ALP/Greens have already come out against). If they kill the $7 medicare payment, uni changes and newstart changes the government would have no choice but to go to an election. That would suit him because he's polling well ahead of where he was at the last election.

If the non libs in the senate can unify this government won't see Christmas.

BUT he's just as likely to be swayed by the government conveniently giving him a mine he wants.

Well good luck in what you choose. Personally I prefer hands on as in fixing and a bit of design but that's me. It would be a boring world if we all did the same.

As for Clive, he's not dumb. He will do what is good for Clive. IMO only a refund of the mining and carbon tax that he paid will get him on side.

Thanks and I've ended up deciding on enrolling in the Communications degree. Hopefully I like it because the first semester has given me almost $4000 in debt.

As for being hands on and creative, I wish I had those sort of skills. I'm very much left brain orientated.
