lol this, a beer would go down nicely but drinking during the week is a bad habit I've picked up.

Want to see about the Langtons job? Caller?
Honestly, no. If I am going to be on a similar rate now, I may as well stay where I am rather than move around again. Not to say I'm not up for a chat about it, but if I'm going to move I need something concrete where I know there are opportunities for progression and better conditions for work.

My liver will thank me... I think.

It's in Surry Hills, and once you're in, mate, you have more opportunity than what you can imagine.

The pay isn't shit, but the comm's is where people make their money.

If you're going to stay in liquor, play with the big boys ;-)

Sorry man, but commission work is a big no for me. I much prefer knowing what I am being paid rather than having a few awesome weeks followed by multiple shit weeks.

Commission is only acceptable on top of a decent salary. I dug it at Telstra, coz it was an extra $400 my ex didn't know about if I hit my targets.

I always did :)

We pay them a decent salary. Commission is on top of that.

Several of our wine advisers, with commissions, are in six figures.

i take an exception to commission in that it is an extremely short term incentive, and can lead to tactics that damage business in the long term.

whilst it is an effective tool to motivate sales people (and full disclosure, i have earned some decent commission in the past in a couple of roles) it also then creates pressure and bias on being truly 'customer focussed'.

as evidenced by the current issues with financial advisers.

a good salesperson will match the customer's needs to the best product or service from their company that suits the need of the customer. this leads to better customer satisfaction in the short term, and is more likely to lead to longer term repeat business (dependent on the industry, of course.. eg if you're buying a yourself a funeral plan, you generally won't be looking to buy a second..)

we've all had that feeling as a customer where after a few days we realise we've spent money on something that we just didn't need to.. and that leads to buyers remorse, and is why we now have cooling off period laws for things like cars and houses.

my view - structure your sales team's packages correctly, with effective targets (not just a sales target, but things like customer satisfaction, margin etc) so that they are rewarded for doing the right job and you'll have a better long term organisation.

/my 2.7c. worth (2c + gst, + commission).

My studies this year in management theory would agree with muzby's reasoning. Studies have shown that cash based incentives hsve only limited efficacy in terms of performance improvement. That said, that's from a broader viewpoint as opposed to sales specific roles.

It works when you have the right offers in place. When you don't, it ruins your margins and brands.
