Support runners

Why do we never seem to have them when our forwards take hitups? Cuthbo and Mason have to chuck the ball well behind them when off loading to find anyone. Its not good enough and was a massive highlight from today's game

Is it not coached into them or are they just plain f**king lazy?

Our forwards are just good enough. If you looked how Souths played, their forwards always support each other.

Its about enthusiasm and commitment, continuing to push up 9 times out of 10 for no result but ready for when the pass is made.

We just aren't that committed.

what is a support runner?

also I'm not surprised a lot of our guys don't offload much, our error counts feel like they've been pretty terrible all year.

I think it is the brand of footy we play. It is almost robotic. I would love a fan forum where someone asks that exact question JW. Where is the movement off of the ball? Cuthbo tries real hard to get us going with 2nd phase. Not his fault his support runners are standing still when he looks to offload.

Its infuriating

The same reason why our backs do double the work in carting it up as our forwards. Pure laziness. Perhaps a lack of focus, too. I feel like pulling my hair out watching us try to get out of our end. I feel like, despite the grueling off season, that we were fitter last year, too... But it really could just be laziness, as a 50 year old Bedsy seems to be managing alright.

Bunnies today made that break where they were able to offload to a new support runner like 3 times in the one movement.

Just sat there and thought to myself, why arent we doing that shit? Cuthbo and Mason always seem to get their arms free.

The amount of times I watched a potential support runner stand around in preparation for the next hitup was comical.

When guys like Willie and Darbs come from winning cultures they must be wondering how long it will take before they see it again. Hats off to Boyd cos he seems to have learnt patience here and I think his maturity has been developed well and truly by this season. More to the point he has become a senior player who has plenty of responsibility now. He talks plenty on the field.

I have been trying to remember an article in a paper or magazine at the beginning of the year.
In an interview with Adam Cuthbertson he said Bennett had told him to stifle his offloading ability as not all players can offload and he needed to fit into the system.

I thought his offloading ability was his why he was brought here.
This was in the first week or so of the season so Bennett may have planned to introduce it later, we will see i guess.

That's what we need more of, offloads, 2nd phase play to give the backs some space.

I think the lack of support play is why we have so few offloads.

Not sure it's because Wayne has trained them not to offload so why bother supporting, or just lazy players.

We are lucky to have runners, let alone support runners.

I wouldn't mind seeing Roberts run off our forwards a bit more. He is apparently as fit as Gids, so on plays where he doesn't need to be in at half, why not sniff around the ruck?

He has been offloading well and often lately I think. Problem is that nobody is running off him so it just goes back to a man standing still.

Another problem is with those late offloads, that Snowy and Cuthbertson usually do, is that they go to Buderus, who in his prime would dart upfield straight away and pinch an easy 10-15m, but now he doesnt have the legs and takes a while to find a ready ball runner.
