SUPPORTERS SPLIT ON CONTROL OF RUGBY LEAGUE COMMISSION
9 February 2010

A survey produced by the Rugby League Supporters and Volunteer Workers’ Association has shown fans are not 100% behind a club controlled independent commission with 34.7% of those surveyed preferring to nominate & vote for commission members themselves in an NRMA style association, while 33.3% are happy for the NRL Clubs to be in control.

The Survey the first produced by the Association was designed to reflect issues that are on the minds of supporters and to help give a stronger voice to what the Association believes is the largest stakeholder of the Sport.

On the issue of expansion 78.2% would like to see the Central Coast Bears join the NRL, while the Perth Reds 18.2% and Adelaide 18.6%, edged out the call for a Queensland team (Central QLD 13.4%, Sunshine Coast 12.7%).

But in the Survey’s biggest result a massive 97.1% of those surveyed believed more money should be made available for junior development and country rugby league. In other results 92.7% believed there should be a uniform code of conduct written into NRL player contracts and 92% agreed that the CEOs of the NSWRL, QRL, ARL and NRL should be more accessible and answerable to supporters.

My understanding is that this survey was 60% country 40% City.

"the largest stakeholder of the Sport".

Pretty hard to argue with that I'd have thought.

I wonder if they are being heard?

3. How do you think the administration of rugby league should be structured?
a) As it is now 50% ARL 50% NRL 19.5%
b) Controlled by the NRL clubs 33.3%
c) Association of football club members who elect a board to run the game 34.7%
d) Other 0.2%
e) Full independent commission as per AFL model 12.3%

I would like to see a better-structured survey question.

Yeah in retrospect, but when this survey was originally commissioned the current clubs model was not in the picture yet - the only model talked about was 'splitting ownership among the Clubs".

Its easy to forget but the first we heard of the current proposal was only a few months ago this Survey was originally commissioned in March 09 I think and was due to close just as the new model was being talked about - bit of bad luck!

Interesting.

No to the News Ltd commission.

Big YES to the bears.

I am in both camps.

But more support for Adelaide than Perth? Interesting!

I get the feeling that org isn't very representative.

Still, near impossible to be properly representative with these sort of things.

Proberable what you think it is as that is how it was worded. It would be like the NRMAs elections (the road association not the insurance arm). So niether the ARL News or the NRL Clubs would have a direct say on appiontments.

Interestingly enough the IC proposal has been attacked as it was b) when it is actually e)
...
As I said at the time the survey was originally done b) was not e) or anything at the time except a rumour in the papers.

I think the main think you can take out of the result is that people want more input/control in how RL is run (notice that big majority agreed that officials need to be more available to the public).

A couple of supporter rep appointments on the Commission maybe?

Can't believe people would rather have Adelaide than Perth. Do people have no idea how much more advanced Perth is in terms of RL than SA?
