What I'd like to know is, if this is a political or social issue and not a footballing one, why are they suspending football matches over it?

precaution? what other weekly event attracts mass amounts of police and public at the same venue all across the country? the people are pissed off enough as it is with police treatment and mass gatherings at football stadiums provide the right encounters to attack police.

Part of the reason for that was because after the violence after that Palermo match when a police officer was killed, all matches were immediatley suspended.

In this case, a fan was killed and most of the matches went ahead. There were signs at some of the games saying 'One Life equals another'. The ultras, who have far to much power in Italy, felt that more value had been placed on the police officers life than the shot fan.

It IS a football problem, but goes beyond football.

we didnt play good enough. Italy would have destroyed us if they had 11 men, which they should have, no way was that a red card. we would have even lost on penalties probably. italy kicked all 5 of their penalties in the final, and we showed we arent that great at penalties when we played japan at the asian cup. im upset about the loss sure, but not bitter.

They were caught in the refereeing bribary scandal. Thus they influence referees to get them to where they were, ie champions league qualification. They should never have been able to compete in the competition.
